COBWEB
    #19036748 - 10/26/13 05:40 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Does anybody know if cobweb can grow on agar plates? I have a 2 plates with very thin, wispy mycelium and I m trying to figure it out. If anyone could post some pictures on cobweb that would be great!

Ive had cobwebb in petri dishes before Yes, BUT that looks to be more like mycelium to me good sir.  Wait for second opinion and if you ever do run across cobwebb DONT FRET.  Nobody explained to me that cobweb is the easiest thing to get rid of. A 3mL H2O2 (or Hydrogen Peroxide) 100 mL H20 (water) solution in a spray bottle will cause cobweb to die with a couple mists!  I believe all is well except last pic.  Looks iffy...

Yeah the first four are good, I would agree to that. The last one though doesn't seem to be contaminated, i know the pics suck, but that bacteria blob that you can see is thick mycelium and then it branches out very thin, I have never seen anything like it. Do you have any pictures of cobweb growing on agar? I have finally saved these plates from contam lol, you think I'm good to transfer to grains? Or should I play it safe and do another transfer??

How long has it taken from the first signs of white till the pictures above?

You mean from germination? One day, since these were agar to agar transfers. All in all about 9 days for these plates to grow. They would have grown faster, but I have a tendency to wrap my plates very tight with saran wrap which I think messes up my Air exchange for my plates.

Im thinking I am going to make a sleeve of petris and just store them in the bag they come in and store them for when I need to use them. If I saran wrap them nice and tight, they shouldn't dry out or get contaminated if poured carefully.

Does the cobweb look white or grey? I can't tell from the picture, at 11 oclock it looks like my 4th plate, very whispy and odd growth..

Cobweb has an off-white grey color and is very thick, but wispy and grows quicker than cube myc. Dont use saran wrap for wrapping petris use glad wrap as it can breathe for GE. Saran wrap doesn't provide GE. I just poured my first petris not too long ago.

What im doing is i store them in sealed sandwich baggies in some sort of insulated container like a cardboard box so they dont get condensation. Temperature differentials will cause condensation on the lids and the insulated box helps with that. When i inoc a plate, i wrap it in parafilm. Though if one doesn't have parafilm you could probably wrap in glad wrap, or store them in a sandwich baggie or something.

Yeah that is what I meant its glad wrap. I would buy parafilm but it is a little pricey for what it is. Would a shoe box work? I could put petri dishes in a baggie and then put them in the shoebox, I think that would work too. How is cob web whispy but thick? I kind of get what your saying.

Ya i got my petris in sandwich baggies inside a cardboard box because it insulates the dishes and helps with temp fluctuations, which causes condensation. I wrap any inoculated dish in parafilm, since i figure sandwich baggies might let contams in with temp fluctuations.

I meant thick and wispy as in, it grows in volume rapidly(thick), but the texture of cobweb mold is very wispy.

What I really want to do is get a minifridge just for petri dishes, that way I could have them in storage for a long time. That way I could keep a bunch of different type of edible mushroom dishes on standby until the spring comes, this year I am going to try an outdoor bed. LSOS has a really good selection of live mycelium syringes, so hopefully my indoor cultivation skills improve to where I can see myself going outdoors and trying patches around oaktrees. I'm thinking the old straw tek:smile:
