Could this be Gymnopilus junionus (spectabilis)?

Habitat: Birch, oak, beech-forest.
Quite big caps (10cm across) and thick stem (3-4cm across).
Didn't grow gregarious. Was growing from the ground, there could be buried wood but I didn't see any. And the mushrooms didn't taste bitter. This talks against G. junionus, but since they match pretty good to me visually I need your expert opinions .
The only other species I could think about is Cortinarius caperatus, but I found that species just a few weeks earlier and they were not quite like this and only in a completely different habitat.

Nice save Joie, as I read just now they could be toxic if eaten raw.

bloodworm: Yes, but I found it a month ago and I didn't bring them home because I knew the bigger mushrooms are less potent. But it would have been the first time I found gyms and I have looked for several years, from what I've read they are more common in the most southern parts of my country.
Joie: Thanks, it looks like a better match!

Pleasure. I found it once or twice and it demands attention with big shots in several of my field guides just so I can pounce at times like this.
"...very large and highly distinctive toadstool that has probably experienced more name changes than any other British species. It has often been called Gymnopilus spectabilis but that is a quite different fungus growing on rotting wood and now correctly known as Gymnopilus junonius." - Buczacki (2012), Collins
So it is by no means the first time P. aurea has caused confusion!
