I wouldn't if I were you. The roots of an orchid love an extremely airy mixture. Peat will almost guarantee rot. I would use a mixture of for bark, horticultural charcoal, perlite or pumice and maybe a little sphagnum moss for moisture holding. U can also use plastic beads, styrofoam, rocks, packing peanuts or anything that water runs through freely. Then water your orchid every few days and it will have tons of bright green roots crawling out of the pot in quite an attractive manner. Good luck.

You want sphagnum for some orchids, or i should say is fair for some orchids.

Hmm. I'm not sure about that. As long as it is in chunks that are somewhere between 1/8th and 1/2 inches and the bark doesn't leach out a ton of bad shit when you soak it in water it should work. But I would stay on the safe side and try to find something else. If you can spare a little money, premixed orchid soil is easy to come buy at any decent plant store. I would check there first.

some orchids seem to be very picky, others can be planted in dirt.

What type of orchid? Different species require different conditions. After we have this knowledge we can help.
