Schwartz and Keljar's Grand Foliage Escapade
    #19004514 - 10/20/13 03:48 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

My good buddy Keljar and I have been exploring the woodlands around our home for a while now and every day we see countless mushrooms along our travels and thought it would be a good idea to try and snag a few snapshots of them for identification.

We've been having a great deal of fun doing this for the past few days as a hobby and a little bit of natural stress relief, hopefully we've accumulated enough nice shots for proper identification and we'd like to take the time and preemptively who contributes here.

Now then:

Habitat: I'll fill out the habitat portion of this and supplement the rest with photographs, if any warrant further investigation I'll take prints of the mushrooms in question when the time comes.

All of these mushrooms are from the same woodland area in South Jersey, some of them are nestled on trees, beneath over-turned trees or in damp creek banks that are slowly drying up. The month is October and we're about halfway through it.

Lets begin with my first set: We came across these beauties beneath and overturned tree, there's a small creek nearby and the land is quite damp. When I reached inside to feel the habitat of these shrooms it was a very cool damp location.
Beneath the over-turned Tree
This is when we first spotted these bad boys, stood out immediately and I just had to snap a quick picture before actually running up on it and leaning in.

These are what they looked like nestled up together on the inside of the little self made earthen tree cove. From inside I spotted about four (exuding those three) more however I only picked three for photography and identification.
Shot of three of them together, one side gills facing up.
same as the last photo, at a different angle.
And now for the shots of the gills themselves!

My friend and I are VERY curious as to what those three are specifically.

After that location we found another set of interesting shrooms at the bottom of a now drying but still very damp creek bed. Amongst the foliage of downed bark/tree and alongside some healthy moss these three beauties were popping up to greet us.

*We're especially interested in knowing what the two above species are.*

Below we have an assortment of mushrooms that I'll simply put into two categories, not on tree, on tree. We're really interested in finding out if any of these mushrooms are edible or poisonous or even pscyo-active. (We weren't specifically looking but if that's the case, whoo.)

We had another collage with shots from ground shrooms but I don't feel as if it's large enough and I'd rather get some of the (if any lol) identification of these others out of the way.

Anyway, there you have it! Big thank you to anyone helps us, we're just two inexperienced nature enthusiasts wanting to dabble into the world of mycology.

Namtaste.

First mushrooms, Hypholoma, probably Hypholoma laterium.

Mushrooms in moss are Hygrocybe sp.

Tree 1,2 Probably Lenzites betula, can't see the bottom, so it's just a maybe

Tree 3, 4 Lenzites elegans

Tree 5,6 not sure, maybe oysters but maybe not

Tree 7,8,9 Probably all Stereum ostrea, 9 is for sure

Tree 10 Daedaleopsis confragosa

Thank you, Falcon for swiftness of your response and for your identifications.

I'm back with more, this time from a patch of woodlands west of the location I searched before; This time I came across a couple hundred mushrooms all sprouting up in patches practically everywhere.

The first ones I came across were these, the Caps looked to be in bad shape and I'm quite curious as to what's going on.

That's the end of those, those mushrooms literally littered the forest floor. I hope nothing is wrong with them or that they're just out of season and dying. :frown:

At this point there were just a trail of mushrooms, all different varieties and species; We just walked around for a good three hours taking shots of various ones.

Okay, almost done I promise.
The last species that I was curious about are these smaller brown fellas below.

That's all the battery on my phone had time for; As always I'm looking forward to your feedback and appreciate the effort you take in making your IDs for us less informed.

Still eagerly awaiting, I've attempted a number of IDs myself but lack the confidence in my "opinion" of what we found are.

Here's a picture of a beautiful Wooly Bear black caterpillar that we found and took some shots with before letting it scurry back on it's way.

Hey Schwarzwald, if you uploaded your pictures to here, you'd get more people looking at them, quicker and more accurate ID's too, it's more likely to be seen by someone who's familiar with a species.

Fucked up, i don't think is fucked up, it's a hydenellum species, I'm not too familiar with them because I rarely see them maybe, Hydenellum spongipes

White is an Amanita, don't know which one

Lbrown is possibly Boletus badius

Sbrown is a Suillus, Look at Suillus luteus, probably not that but something closely related.

I appreciate your input yet again, Falcon; I'm also excited because I managed to correctly identify one of those species for myself! I hope this means I'm picking things up, this website has really invigorated my interest in the local woodlands around me. There's nothing quite like blowing a dutch and going shroom hunting with your best friend.

I'd like to upload the photos here but they'd clutter the page up so badly that my OCD simply wouldn't allow it. I've been taking so many shots that it would really be a lot of pictures. Your suggestion is an excellent one however and the next time I'm curious about a specific strain in the hoard of links I put up I'll have that individual species picture alongside it.

That white amanita has me excited because I recognized a large cluster of red amanita muscaria not too far from it. I'll collect and photograph them tomorrow, I'm eager to post them to this thread for proper identification and viewing.

Ha, keep the pictures coming, mushroom hunting will become obsessive too, now that you're ID'ing them yourself.
