"Americans stole our dream of democracy"

said Samir Zikra, Syrian artist who was for decades fighting for human rights, freedom of speech and emancipation of women in arab world. (Here's a declaration 99 Syrian intelectuals made in 2000: http://www.meib.org/articles/0010_sdoc0927.htm ) But after Washington decided to democratize arabs with army they have to be quiet. Islamic fundamentalist & arab nationalists gained more power then ever and every effort for reforms, democratization & modernization is labeled as a cooperation with western enemy. This was the end of opposition.
This was taken from an article in a local newspaper. My question is that since it was easy to predict such outcome of Iraq intervention: Is US government really trying to fight terrorism? Because to me it seems that it's quite contrary. Endles war against eternal enemy is quite a convenient way to distract people from internal affairs.

This war has nothing to do with distracting anyone from anything. Clinton was the one who did that type of thing.

Yeah, I don't believe the indicators of how the economy is doing that have often been in place for decades. I would rather choose to believe a foreigner that doesn't even live here. The economy is growing again. Slowly, but surely.

Haha. Maybe all of the economic indicators that have been used for years. actually the only major economic indicator showing improvement (barely) is the stock market. the NYSE and NASDAQ track a couple of dozen of the top companies in the country, hardly a good indicator of broad economic recovery. the more important economic indicators, like unemployment and local and state tax revenues still show that the economy is in shambles. where do you get your info?

I don't think that Bush is trying to distract the American people away from economical troubles. It's obvious that he found a way to distract us from his ineptitude. In short, Dubbya is a blubbering idiot.

"americans stole our dream of democracy" i think this is rather ironic. in a place where islamic fundamentalism is so rampant, democracy itself threatens human rights for women. at least under a secular dictator, they might be able to get some unorthodox level of equality. not so when a bunch of fundamentalist nuts are going to the polls. her statement is extremely misguided.
