I agree with that. Although I wouldn't want to deny anyone the right or possibility to eat meat. I don't think it's necessary either; if everyone would cut back their meat consumption to once a week, it would be possible to radically reorganize meat production in such a way that it would be perfectly sustainable and much less revolting than it is now.

You would have to have a decently large household for the food scraps to feed more than one little chicken though, right?
It depends a lot on how much you throw away, so there's always that issue. With what I throw away in terms of food personally, I wouldn't be able to feed a chicken. Perhaps if I was a three-person household, I would be able to feed a chicken. And I would be able to feed a lot more if I produced my own vegetables, as you're often left with scraps and stuff that you just don't eat yourself (the lowest leaves of certain things, lettuce that has gone to flower, etc.)

Pigs, on the other hand, should not be raised for meat. That's abhorrent.
I'm not very enthusiastic about it, but I cannot label it as categorically wrong. Doing so would only be based on sentimental reasons and if you go there, it becomes really difficult to eat anything at some point.
Anyway, thanks for a good debate; seems like we're pretty much on the same wavelength, really!

Hey OP, didn't read every response to your original post, but just wanted to say going vegan is tough.
I've attempted it lately, just to see if I truly do feel better, mentally and physically. Of course a true vegan doesn't eat eggs or any kind of dairy, so even having your own eggs to eat wouldn't be vegan in the true sense of the word. Just more humane.
What may help you is to look at food in a different light. I, myself, have an epiphany of sorts about food and what I put into my body. Now I look at food as life or death. Not in the sense of if I don't eat I'll die, but rather is what I'm eating life or death (or just not-life).
For example, fruits and veggies are grown. They are picked at a certain time, and meant to be eaten before they rot. Eating them before they rot, they are "alive". Once rotten, they are "dead". An animals meat, to me, is also "dead" by the time we consume it. Processed foods are "not-life". They aren't necessarily dead because they were never alive.
So I ask myself now, is what I'm eating "alive" or "dead". This is why I don't consider myself vegan, because for me it's not really the cruelty to animals aspect that so many true vegans are bothered by.
The Rastafarians have similar views, and choose to eat "ital" food.
No matter what you choose, do what is right for you.

You will see A LOT of self righteous vegans. That's why I separate myself from veganism. Rastafari for the win!

Negative. fee's post is just very stupid. Some veg*ns can be very passionate about ethical treatment of animals and maintaining the ecosystem - because, you know, animals are sentient beings who don't deserve to be enslaved and tortured, and the Earth is where we all live and worth protecting - and they can be too self-righteous and aggressively outspoken about it (to the point of counter-productivity); but veg*nism really has nothing to do with being 'better' or 'cooler' than others.
