It's time.

"Do behold the King in his glory, King Sequoia! Behold! Behold! seems all I can say. Some time ago I left all for Sequoia and have been and am at his feet, fasting and praying for light, for is he not the greatest light in the woods, in the world? Where are such columns of sunshine, tangible, accessible, terrestrialized?" - John Muir

Shout out to pseudotsuga, fun hunting with ya :gethigh:

Yea it was very dry up there but we managed to find what few mushrooms were growing. It wasn't an easy task, the Pholiotas were the only mushroom fruiting in abundance.

pseudo- I found the Tricholomopsis on the last day at the end of the trail, I was all excited.
The Jewish guys were super chill. But I'm still laughing at the fact that his special pomegranate pipe was a plastic bottle!
And yes, we definitely need to get together for another hunt. Thanks again for the Oysters, had them on some pizza when we got back home.

Interesting story about the Sequoia redwood... It's a Cherokee name. At the time when the Cherokee tribes were being integrated into new Euro/American culture a half breed the Cherokee called Sequoia was working to develop an alphabet for the Cherokee language to help with the integration. The Cherokee saw this as an act of dis loyalty and allegiance to the whites. Sequoia was so named because it is a curse word in their language. It means "pig inside". A reference to his white half. In the Cherokee language there is no worse curse than to call someone a pig. I would indicate modern culture equivalents but that would be a lot more offensive. The point is that the name Sequoia is an intentional insult. We never knew that when we (ignorant and aloof whities) commemorated that individual by naming a tree after him. And now there are many more references that honor the tree itself with that name. National parks, campgrounds, housing communities, etc. All of it based on the foulest curse in the Cherokee language! I thought it was funny. I hope I didn't bore everyone.

This is entirely possible, but is entirely conjecture.

The general claim is that the genus was named specifically for George Guess who's Cherokee name was Sequoya [Ssiquoya]. Even the etymology of that name is in dispute. If it was applied by that community with that meaning and for that reason, it is certainly ironic that they were therefore unable or unwilling to record it. If you know of a community who specifically preserves that story I would love to know of it.

There doesn't seem to be anything verifiable to support this claim as regards the naming of the genus for George Guess, and the origin of the naming is not actually clear. Endlicher certainly never said so, and if anybody knew, it would be him.

It is. If there's a surviving oral tradition of it it is even cooler. The ironic component amuses me though. Not in a derisive manner, mind you.

I'm always one to appreciate correction in the face of fact. But as you stated, there are few convictions on this matter. My information comes from a language book written by Prentice Robinson about the Cherokee language. You see, I have a small amount of Cherokee heritage and I thought it would be novel to learn some of the language. I gave up after discovering that it's about as difficult as Chinese!?! And probably has closer ties there than any Euro language!!! That and I have no one to share it with. Anyway... The tale is a matter of record in the folklore of spoken Cherokee. And as historical records go, native folk lore is about as common a reference as any I suppose. Let's also keep in mind that the atrocities perpetrated on native American peoples has commonly been spun into something less horrible for historical record. I'm inclined to believe what the people who invented the meaning of the word do.

I find the whole word thing pretty interesting. It's ironic like how we named Yosemite, which I believe translates into "a people who should be feared" or "a people who will kill you," or something close to that. The Natives actually called the valley the Ahwahnee.

They look fine to me.

Why are you calling the Hygrocybe H. nigerescens rather than H. singeri?

Your Melanoleuca looks kind of like a Clitocybe, check for amyloid warts on the spores.

Your Agrocybe is A. putaminum.

Now that I look back my reasons don't seem legitimate.

Nice finds Ran-D! The diversity of colors in your pics is very cool.

I went out today and only found a swarm of ladybugs.
It is funny, I was just wondering if p. cyanescens grows in red colored wood chips. Thanks for sharing.

I'm drawing such a blank on that orange tinted polypore, but it looks much like one that I've used as pigment for a very nice yellow/gold color for wool.

That one really threw me off. I found some Phellinus gilvus in that area before which are yellow when young but these ones seemed different.

I also have an unclipped ginger colored pit mix. He's the bomb! And Ran-D's dog is tre cool. She looks smart too. Dogs are my favorite people.

Ran-D, look into Carolina dogs. It's a wild American dingo. Your dog has a lot of the right features. Almond eyes, upcurled tail, those long erect ears. My guy is half Carolina dog and looks similar in many ways.

I have gimp but I really don't know how to use it well.
Do you guys shop most of the pictures you post?
What do you do to them? The only thing I ever do is go under the 'color' in the menu bar and go down to 'auto' and try to make up for the fact my camera takes crap pictures.

The little white ones look like Collybia cirrhata growing on an old Russula.

The white ones weren't growing from a cone. The substrate fell apart when I moved them so a decayed mushroom makes sense.

Haven't hit the coast yet, just went up to Columbia. The forest was soaking wet up there, but still nothing around. I don't know, maybe they got some frost or something up there already? I'm hoping the coast is doing a little better.

Yea that white one was actually one of my favorite finds that day. My impression was a Hygrophorus sp. of some sort.

Let me start by adding another +++ on the pics Ran-D.

Pseudo, good news! Shaggy parasols are easy to grow!!! If you like I can send you some Chlorophyllum olivieri next fall (I've already preserved all mine). Maybe even spring. They fruit twice a year but I don't always get springers. They're saprobes and seem to like forest humus covered in a combination of conifer and hardwood litter near cover. Without much effort I was able to start colonies all over my yard. Sorry I don't have any right now though. But maybe someone else does.

Actually, I tend to find a lot of Inocybes in the oak forests here. That's where these were as well.

pseudotsuga- The Chlorophyllum love these oak forests too, they go off in the leaf litter. I got a couple parks down here where they fruit prolifically, I've still never tried them though!

Glad you folks enjoy looking at the photos, cuz I friggin love taking em

People love 'em. I've seen four distinct varieties here in the PNW (though only three are categorized). IMHO Only Chlorophyllum olivieri is good to eat. Some people call it "the gray one". It favors more wooded habitat than the others. Excellent flavor though the texture isn't noteworthy. The others have the same lack luster texture and far less flavor, so, good but not great. But it could be a regional thing also.

Are you asking me or Chuck? The point and shoot I use is the Canon Powershot A3300. I'd definitely recommend it for anyone who wants to get decent mushroom photos without carrying a real camera around.

How you use your camera matters 100 times more than what camera you use.

Pretty much any modern digital camera takes great photos, what really matters is how you set up the mushrooms, how you do the lighting and what settings you use.

You can get a camera that takes awesome photos for $30 on ebay if you know what to look for.

If you want awesome photos, carry reflectors and a tripod.

They look really nice.  Some of them could benefit from a reflector, which could be as simple as a piece of typing paper just outside of the shot.  The setups could be a bit better, try to think about how bobzimmer would set up the mushrooms if he was there.  Also consider carrying a paint brush to remove debris from the mushrooms.

Agreed. I was just going to say I need to set them up better and crop the pictures less.

I do have a knife with a brush, I just forget it sometimes. That's why I'm hesitant to even make a reflector because I'm already overwhelmed with the other stuff I carry (backpack, camera, bean bag and/or tripod, remote, lens cap, knives, smoking accessories, yada yada yada...) Then half the time I also have to worry about my dog, and then if I find cool mushrooms I have to carry them around too. It's just a big mess and I usually leave something every time I go somewhere.

It's a $250 Olympus about three years old with a lot of user adjustable parameters and a fat zoom lens. I know it takes good pictures, I just haven't learned how to set it up for that. The "auto" settings produce low-ish resolution compared to Ran-D's shots. It's just laziness on my part. If it were a priority I could probably change things.

All the rich food gave me vivid, bad dreams. I'll catch a nap after the coffee wears off.

Pretty much any modern digital camera takes great photos, what really matters is how you set up the mushrooms, how you do the lighting and what settings you use.

Um, well, I'm not expecting to find a magical Camera that takes perfect pictures for me if that's what you think i mean.

Settings are what matters. Most point and shoots don't allow you much freedom. per examp- I've never had one that allowed me to control f/stops.

And some only use Auto-exposure...

There are definitely some Cameras that do these automatic things better than others...

I love it man. What are you calling that Marasmius?

The best macro match I've found is M. inaquosi. I've never heard of it though and I can't find anything about it other than this.

Hypholoma fasciculare

Cortinarius sp.

Tulostoma sp.

Hebeloma crustuliniforme & Arbutus unedo

What appeared to be a tiny Psilocybe. Also found a dried specimen that had a blue margin and partial veil remnants.

We'll see if they mature, it was a very dry area but they were hidden under some bushes.

I'm not really sure about everything that is important, but I'd start with spores (size, shape, and in melzers) and cheilocystidia (Do a crush mount, you need to see the base of the cells).  I found two different species on the same lawn once...

Goes to show where priorities lie.
What software do you use for editing?
I like the black and white with the colored mushrooms, really makes them pop-out of the screen.

Its a joke because it was described as many different species all over the world and with bad micro on the type, every species was new, and location if you count that, which Guzman did.

So there was like "1000" species of the same species called different thing. I think its more like 6 or 7.. i dont really know how many, never counted haha

You sure that is a Psilocybe? What's with the orangey cortina-like veil remnants (or spores) on the stipe?
