Interesting Buddhist proverb

When the Buddha described how long humanity had been on the journey, as he spoke of reincarnation he talked of a mountain six miles wide, six miles high, six miles long. Every hundred years a bird would fly with a silk scarf in its beak and run it over the mountain once. The length of time it takes the scarf to wear away the mountain is the length of time you have been on the path.

maybe we have different concepts of what reincarnation is
symbols are funny things, help and hinder us, some kinda strange paradoxical duality built into the entirety or reality, its almost like were not even here at all
but that's just silly, i'm looking at my hand, typing on a keyboard, all evidence is in support of there being an individual I.

Of course, but does that make it any less mumbo jumbo than it is? No. Its just nonsense explaining nonsense.

This isn't a drug website, this is a mushroom forum.
Also, its sarcasm. Something that is hard to pick out on the interwebs.

Would take a bird a long ass time to wear away a mountain using a silk scarf and only sliding the scarf over once a 100 years.
This is how long we've been living and dying and that's what the quote meant

Unfortunately the story does not add up, the Homo genus has only been around for 2.5 million years. A bird with a scarf could not possibly erode a 6mi x 6mi x 6mi mountain in merely 25,000 passes.
And you might say, "but RotS, reincarnation encompasses all forms of life." Even if we ignore the question's phrasing (Buddha described how long humanity had been on the journey), and even if the bird flying over the mountain was of the earliest variety possible (archeopteryx), at most if could have rubbed the mountain with a scarf 1.5 million times, figuring that archeopteryx only came into existence around 150 million years ago, and can only make a pass once every 100 years.
Assuming that the scarf is rather large at a foot wide, it still has to drag over 36mi of terrain to complete a single full pass of the mountain. We're talking less than 10 full passes over the mountain in the best case scenario.
TL;DR - Buddha didn't know shit. Neither does Richard Alpert.

You didn't remember that there are atoms making up everything and the space between your hand and the air is the same distance as the space between atoms in anything...didnt your third grade teacher tell you we cant see everything?

if you wanna be a funny guy, I think its funny you use the word evidence when you're missing a lot of it in you're conclusion that you're seperate from the world around you...don't take it personally we're raised this way
