Getting contaminates when mycelium hits edges of plates

Why is it that almost every time my culture hits edge of petri it contaminates, I am using duratape, and putting in plastic baggies but very few times have I had them hit edge of plates w/o cont. why is this? I think maybe this should have been posted in agar & liquid cult. But it wouldn't let me post, I think it applies here also. Does anyone have a clue as to why this is. I know I am supposed to transfer before it hits edge but i just don't get it! Let me know if anyone knows the answer to this.

Yeah I'm not sure exactly why that happens but it's not that unusual. It might help if you use parafilm instead of or in addition to the plastic bag. In any case though I still think it's best to use the mycelium before it reaches that point unless you're planning to store the culture in which case a culture slant would be the way to go.

I was hoping I would get a replie from you, Kissel, yeah I can't find that micropore tape anywhere, first time the pharmacist said that the transpore tape was it, yeah right melted like a mofo in the pressure Cooker, but pharmacist said it was same, And I took her word what a mistake! I know I can order it online but I have read on here that duratape works almost the same seems to be ok so far! I also spoke with 3m they wouldn't tell me it was pc able but said it was almost the same as micropore, just stronger, so I imagine not as breathable I have one more question Kissel or anyone who knows for that matter,, what would be a decent microscope that isn't ungodly in price that I could view on computer, if all of those are quite expensive how about one that at lest has 400x mag., as I would like to view my cultures on agar and see these clamp connections, among other things!

The sticky side of the tape is practically sterile so you shouldn't need to sterilize it.
