Amanita Muscaria recipes and storage?
    #19033244 - 10/25/13 09:21 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

I found like 10 or so caps today. The article linked below claims that drying them is not a good way to go for storage. But drying and then freezing is really the only thing i feel comfortable doing. It should turn out okay I hope?

http://www.shroomery.org/8667/Amanita-muscaria-A-New-Outlook

The guy in that article says it's best used in small amounts, and can be used daily in the winter. I really want to try it HIS way in that respect. Has anyone tried it?

Also looking for an recipes for amanita muscaria. My girlfriend likes to use the mushrooms I find in her cooking. What would make that dried frozen hunk of mushroom tasty?

Thanks in advance for all your help guys! Love you

be careful with this mushroom! it is considered poisonous. Have you eaten it in the past?

This is how David Arora prepares amanita muscaria:

I do not think it is wise to use deadly poisonous mushroom. I've witnessed a mushroom poisoning of my local friend who happened 6 years ago. He is saved from poisoning but, hi still has a stomach problems and persistent pain in the stomach. What does that have a remained consequences of poisoning.
With wild mushroom have no joke, and I do not see anything that is cool in putting at risk your own health. You have in nature very healthy and delicious wild mushrooms that will improve your health, and you will sure enjoy the taste.

Amanita muscaria is "toxic" in that it contains ibotenic acid, but doesn't possess amatoxins. I have many friends who've eaten this mushroom dried and only had the intense experience of a muscimol trip (the ibotenic acid denatures to muscimol),  which in itself can very unpleasant and seems similar to severe poisoning (vomitting, etc.) especially if you go through it unwittingly.  Its is very delicious mushrooms that will not intoxicate you if you just boil it fresh then toss the water and continue to cook up them mushrooms. It should not be viewed as deadly mushroom because it hasn't killed anyone in north america ever according David Arora.

Here is a paper by David Arora about the cultural bias in field guides, using the edibility of A. muscaria as focus of the paper.

Although you are correct that they do not have amatoxins. Our southeastern vars have shitloads of muscarine in them. This is a nasty chem that makes omphalotus so toxic. Hopefully you live out west and collected them there. . Muscarine poisoning won't kill you but you will wish you were dead. Trust me.

Yep I am out west and notice I did not say I have eaten them.
Most of the people I know who've consumed this followed David Arora's instructions for safe preparation (according to them it was really delicious), only a couple used it for psychoactive purposes.
That is interesting note about the muscarine content, I normally seen it mentioned as containing trace amounts, but who knows where those authors got their info.

Yup. I was directing that more to the op than you pseudotsuga. Our var is a golden yellow capped and I know of several people that tried to eat it using auroras method and got sick as shit. It has been listed as a subspecies Guessowii by some authors.

I am all for living on the edge, but that's one mushroom I have no desire to mess with. You are just reassuring that.

I see giant Amanita muscaria on a daily basis in Seattle this time of year. I am still waiting for someone to eat them and then pee in my mouth... Didn't know you could get the toxins out and actually eat them,  interesting!

They still probably don't taste good enough for me to risk it though.
