Newbie (with pics)
    #19034741 - 10/26/13 09:20 AM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Hello community, this is my first post here. I have a couple nice pics of my first ever pins - two of them, though in one pic you can see (I hope I'm not mistaking this) some knotting that I think will form more pins.

I have 6 BRF cakes in the FC, 2 others were crumbled into a straw/manure/vermic blend in foil bread pans that are all Costa Ricans, cased in vermic and are now incubating along with 8 cakes of straw/manure/vermic inoculated with Burmese.

I haven't participated really, just gleaned a lot of knowledge that let me jump from a ton of experience as a home brewer to this new fungal territory.

Thanks and hello!

if that is supposed to be a sgfc it doesn't look like one, and the cakes look pretty dry to me.

Uh... I think it is, not sure on terminology yet. Looked it up, shot gun fruiting chamber? Clear plastic, light above, holes drilled all along bottom and all along top under lid, pans filled with wet perlite for humidity... ??

Cakes were dunked 24 hrs and sopping wet when they went into the FC, have been misted and fanned since going into FC a week ago. They are still heavy when I lift the pans so I think they are retaining water. When they colonized they looked like that even after waiting 2.5 weeks after mycelium fully spread around cakes for consolidation.

All of my cakes are covered in pinhead-size white dots, the biggest of which is the pin? primordial? in the pic.

the holes should be 1/4 inch holes drilled every 2 inches on all 6 sides.
With 4 inches of perlite at the bottom.

Cool, good to know. I have right now a 4" strip along the top and along the bottom of 1/4" holes with 2" spacing. I was assuming that any convection current would render the holes in the middle irrelevant as you get draw from the top and pull fresh air in through the bottom right where the cakes are.

I am fanning very regularly as I am around a lot right now so I don't think they'll be short on FAE but thanks for the tips.

You've got your perlite in pans?

If so, take it and dump it in the bottom of the tub. The air has to be able to flow up through the perlite to keep your rh up.

That cake looks bone dry. I'd think about dunking it again.

Ok, drilled some extra holes in the bottom and dumped the perlite - there's a good thick layer now covering all the holes so airflow should be coming through the perlite bed now.

I checked and they are still very saturated, I know they look dry and don't have that driven snow appearance but honestly, they are very heavy and obviously holding a lot of water.

Good job. The perlite should ideally be 3 or 4 inches deep. Holes on all 6 sides.

Yeah, it could be my phone, and not your cake. I've got a mirror screen cover, and it sometimes makes it hard to see some colours. I should really stop commenting on how peoples projects look, ha ha.

I see your little pins there. Mist and fan.

Thanks, I already notice the humidity in the tub is higher when I fan. I'll post more pics as they develop over the next week or two.

Thanks for the suggestions all!

I picked up some more perlite the other day as I was sitting at just over 2" and wanted to get it right. I figured if I was pulling the cakes out to bring the SGFC up to spec I would dunk and reroll (only rolled the top after the first dunk) as it's been 14 days and they were barely starting to pin and one had a bit of blue bruising starting to form.  I put it down to an incorrectly built SGFC and perhaps not fully rolling the cakes, though I had slow colonization from my Puerto Rican MS so who knows what the genetics are like. Once/if these fruit I'll try to do an isolate with the cardboard clone tek.

So, I think I've done everything I should've done in the first place  - 2" grid of holes, all 6 sides; 4.5" saturated perlite but not dripping through the bottom holes; foil pans lifting the cakes up off the perlite; misting 2 times until glistening and fanning 4-6 times per day and they are getting almost 12-12 light under a north facing skylight (100% indirect sunlight) at 72 df. The blue bruising went away in 12 hours. No sign of contam, everything smells great. Now to stop worrying and be patient.

Thanks for the help! Can you let me know if anything else doesn't look right??

Hey, that looks a lot better. That's a pretty cool idea with those upside down tart cups.

Just keep misting and fanning. Be sure to mist the cakes directly, and then fan for 30 seconds or so to get the evaporation started.

You should have some shrooms in no time. Be sure to take some spore prints!

Good work there!

Hey guys, so just updating here even though I've got nothing to show for it. Just looking for some advice where to go from here.

These 6 cakes colonized for just about 30 days and then had 2 weeks to consolidate while I moved. They were never as fluffy white as lots of the pics I have seen doing research and I think my substrate (BRF + very) was too compacted on some, though I intentionally did not pack it in.

They were birthed and dunked for 24 hours then the tops rolled and they were placed in what I now realize was an incorrectly built SGFC (see above) which has now been corrected. I re-dunked and re-rolled when I built the SGFC correctly and placed them in it.

Everything smells fantastic, like the loamy fresh scent of a forest floor, and there's no visible sign of contam (thoroughly inspected after second dunk) but there's no fuzzy myc growth, no pins, no activity.

The SGFC gets indirect daylight from a skylight directly over the FC so it's on a pretty close to 12/12 cycle, the temp is 72-74 df, I mist usually in the morning and in the evening and fan a few times per day.

My plan is to wait until this weekend to see if anything changes... but at that point I wonder if y'all have a suggestion to try to get these puppies to fruit?? I have some hpoo and straw I could try turning one or two of these cakes into spawn but at this point they have obviously been exposed to contams...  I've also read that people in the past have broken up cakes that aren't fruiting and cased them with straight verm to get them to fruit.

Anyway, like I said I'm waiting until the weekend before I get too worried about things and will keep fanning and misting until then but by this coming sunday it'll be 3 weeks since birthing :/  That said, I am loving this hobby and taking every set back as a learning experience.

Ok so weekend has arrived which means these cakes have been in a FC for 3 weeks and I have 0 activity.... I'm just gonna leave them until there's fruit or until there's something obviously wrong. Has anyone had cakes that took this long to fruit before?

Re-rolling is not recommended, as there are contaminants on the outside of the cake from already being in the FC. It probably won't destroy your grow, though.

What it may have done is cause the cakes to try to colonise the new verm layer a bit before fruiting. This would possibly keep them from fruiting for a few more days.

If they don't look moldy or start to smell bad, then keep them going for now. Just make sure you keep the perlite good and wet (fluff it up with a spoon a bit too), and keep misting and fanning like normal.

In the meantime, start some new cakes or, if you've got a PC, some agar

Hey thanks Khil. What's done is done with these ones so as long as they keep smelling fresh and there's no visible sign of contam I'll keep misting and fanning. I have noticed a few small bright white bumps the size of the head of a pinhead on a couple of them showing through the verm so I'll hold onto hope that they are getting ready to do their thing.

As to the meantime....

I have 8 jars of PF tek nocc'd with some local GT MS syringe I got at a head shop in town - apparently they get their spores locally - and one glass tupperware brick of BRF and verm with the same GT spores. Those are in the closet at room temp with some indirect light. I also have 4 jars of rye with synthetic filter disc injection ports built into them that I'm going to nocc on monday with a A+ MS syringe I ordered... pretty excited.

This time around I made my own BRF instead of using the store bought and my cakes came out much lighter and fluffier, the consistency looked more like many of the successful PF tek grows I've seen on this site so I am hopeful. I plan on spawning to bulk to do some bulk cakes in my SGFC as per bodhisatta's thread.

I would ditch the foil pan things and just use sheet aluminum foil that is not more than 1 cm past the cake on all sides.

well... four weeks.   :waits:

At least I have a couple other projects on the go - some home brewing, 10 BRF jars just starting to show the first fuzzy myc growth (nocc'd a week ago), and now 5 jars of rye berries nocc'd that will be spawned to bulk.

Still though these first 6 still smell great, no sign of metabolites, heavy and still carrying plenty of moisture. Fanning... misting... and there's no evidence really of myc growth into the verm casing layer at all.

genetics? or did my fumbles/failures stall these suckers out?
