My fried has a 2009 MacBook Pro he's offered to sell to me for $300-$500. The only problem is that the hard drive has crashed and the screen is cracked-but that's no big deal.
Does this sound like a good deal? I'm going to take it to the Genius Bar and let them confirm it's only a hardrive problem before I buy it.

Ask Genius Bar if I'm getting a good deal? They'll probably tell me I'm getting ripped off and try to get me to buy a laptop from them.

$300-$500 for a 2009 macbook pro, with a crashed hard drive and cracked screen.
It's probably a run of the mill '09 macbook with no upgrades. Even when it was bought, that thing had such little power for that day and for the price. Compared to technology nowadays, that thing will be SUPER SLOW!! Not to mention it's old, which means used parts, which means lower performance, and shorter lifespan.
If you spend $300-$500 on a laptop, you are guaranteed to get one that will be like two, maybe even three of those macbooks put into one computer.
Don't like windows? Get ubuntu!
edit: In fact with the latest developments in tablets, and superphones, you could probably get one thats more powerful in the same price range.

new screen would cost you at least ~$100-200 minimum and HDD about 50 and for that price and what you are paying for the macbook you could buy a brand new laptop with better, faster specs all around.

. How much is a new MacBook, maybe $1200.00. It comes with a one year warranty and apple support. With the one from your friend you have to: 1) replace the hard drive 2) install the OS X, 3) replace the top assembly ( sorry, you can't replace just the lcd on these models). when you are finished you have spent more than you can find a decent used one on Ebay for, you have no warranty, and if the logicboard goes out in a month, you might as well recycle it.

the cracked screen is really a deal breaker for me.... otherwise i'd say maybe $300 if you really wanted mac specific software.
i have a 13" 2011 macbook air i5 sandy bridge 1.7ghz w/ 256gb SSD i'm considering selling for $700 (plus shipping or pickup in Portland, OR) that's in flawless condition... Just saying'
