Not so simple with pe. with pe you can let them grow long after the veils break. If they start to feel soft or look bluish on the cap then I would pick them. Do not worry about the side pins rotting as long as you get them when you pick the rest.

Also google " when to pick penis envy" and there is a lot of threads out there

Also, the caps will open and the top of the stem will buldge and deform, thats when you know

And some will open a little later, but when the biggest ones are ready I would just pick them all, soak and go for a second flush

They need more time. I wonder why you got so much side pinning and not very much top pinning? It is too dark to tell, but it looks like it may not have been fully colonized when fruited.

Either that or it was too dry. What do you have it in? Did you mist often after putting in fruiting conditions?

Because no liner was used.

Ahh, I overlooked that.

OP I see you have taped the outside, to block light I assume. What the plastic liner does, besides block light, is to hug the sides of the substrate when it shrinks and can prevent that side pinning from happening

It has nothing to do with blocking light.....clear liners can be used as well.

It has everything to do with preventing FAE from hitting the sides.

The plastic will stick to the sides of the substrate while it consolidates, eliminating that microclimate.

It does help if it is darker as bright light is one of several pinning triggers

Not really.....Light is only a secondary pinning trigger....

Light anywhere on a substrate will help trigger pinning anywhere else on the substrate where conditions are right, such as in the gap around the edges.  However, fresh air exchange is the biggest pinning trigger.  Cubensis will pin in total darkness if given fresh air exchange and full colonization.  Light helps the mushrooms grow to full size and weight after pinning.

HAHAHA I fucking KNEW you were going to quote RR.
His word is not the gospel. Fact

I have done experiments where I have taken the same isolate in 2 different tubs and placed one in a completely dark room with all light blocked out, and one in a regular fruiting room . . . Guess what?

The tub in the dark didnt pin . . . for a whole month! Then two days after I put it in the regular fruiting room . . . Guess what?

Pins!

I know for a fact that blocking out light from the sides helps with side pinning, despite what you or RR have to say about it

I know you and RR both know a lot, but coming from someone who puts out tubs like the one above on the regular, I know a lot too.

And light DOES make a difference

Not to mention none of his pics of cubensis grows have anything on my grows, so I can only assume I am just as skilled as RR in that area of mycology . . .

Sure it DOES make a difference, but blocking light will not stop side pinning completely.

On the other hand using a liner and blocking all FAE will.

Use clear liners and you will see.....all the no side pinning.

You cannot get pinning without FAE and/or full colonization, but you can get pinning without light...it happens all the time in nature.....

So if you stop all FAE, but give it lots of light, it will not really pin.

You are trying too hard buddy....

You might know a lot, I am not doubting this, but you do not have the experience of a 40 year mycologist.

I agree his opinion isn't always "gold", but goddam, he is not just talking out his ass.

I believe he does this for a living......but I could be wrong.....

That is true, but it will greatly deter it.

Well when I see cubensis grows of his that match what I do then it would be safe to stop assuming that. I am not trying to boast, just merely point out that from what I have seen of his cubensis grows they are not on par with what I do

Not to mention, from my own experience with intense/direct lighting....it does not cause pinning at any stage, colonization or fruiting.

My grain jars colonize on a shelf litterally 4-5 feet away from my light fixture which has bare bulbs with no shade, and all my tubs colonize and fruit in the same closet, with the same light setup, on the same schedule, with no early pinning.

My tubs do not pin until FAE it introduced, no matter the light levels.

So what makes cubes so different from any other mushroom in regards to lighting?
