OP, first decide which method you want to grow with. Pf tek requires cakes, mono's require two parts, spawn and substrate mixed in the tub and left to colonize again.

I recommend mono's
I did cakes and disliked them for a couple reason
Tons of smalls jars and bins and perlite
I also felt like it was much more work for the mushrooms you get
The FC's with tons of holes are a bitch to make compared to monos FCs
Monos dont require misting if you dont want to
Monos I feel are more work in the beginning . but after you get a flush of like 4 oz dried from it , its so worth it

Definitely find monos the most efficient and hassle free in the end. Once you really get your technique down its a cinch. I'm still ironing out a few things an I've still had nothing but amazing success with them. Nothing like putting in a bit of work and getting a number of monos established and being able to just chill for a minute if you so prefer and let them do Thier thing.
With that I go with rye grains as spawn mostly because I get a good deal on it, and the prep methods are pretty much fool proof.
Coir/verm/gypsum for sub as it's cheap and easy. Much more contam resistant as well.

Thats what I use
Spawn : Rye
Substrate :CVG
Once my room mate moves out Ill have a room as a lab
Then once I get everything in there down nice and contam free i wanna move to harder strains or substrates like HPOoo

I second this nomination.
If they gave notahacker a TC tag I would lose so much respect for the powers.
