Meh, I don't think it looks like anything special. I don't think there's much the Mario franchise can do in the way of innovation. I found it hard and repetitive to even watch the game trailer. I guess I just don't have much Mario nostalgia.

i don't really either. i just love platformers, and the presentation and music of Mario games. plus, for a Platformer, it's pretty innovative. along the lines of the new Rayman games.

Ahhhh, I see. I much preferred Duck Hunt to Mario anyways. I suppose that shows what kind of gamer I am.

i used to love Command and Conquer and Starcraft, but i kinda suck at those games at the same time as i like them, so... i haven't really kept up with the huge online following of games like SC2 and Civilization V and stuff... love the games, but just ain't good at 'em. you play XCom: Enemy Unknown?

that's my favorite strategy game i've played and NOT sucked at, recently.

Mario has sucked pretty hard for a few years now...  :frown:

I think Galaxy was the last one I actually enjoyed.

If you don't count all the crappy little DS clone games that they keep pumping out Call-of-Duty-style, then maybe.

well, they had a second galaxy if that counts lol.

personally, I'm just done with Nintendo, all they do is beat old ips to death with repetitive sequels with no innovation. And god the Wii was terrible, and the WiiU was basically an expansion pack for a console.

i don't really think they making the best decisions either, but they stick by the notion (an i concur) that video games are toys and should be treated as such.

they don't look for the newest tech, nor innovation in the sense of making the next Beyond Two Souls, or Last of Us (notice how i am using examples of games, that are told to be innovative when they really aren't) they just make platformers and childish games mostly, because they choose to. i find that admirable. i've been disappointed with tons of games, and never a Nintendo game, i guess because i know what to expect.

when i get a game that doesn't deliver what it intends to (and that's alot, because all games now are trying to lead with the heading "super realistic and engaging story" whilst not accomplishing those things, and making more gamey game-like titles, that give the player more shooting then is required, in a say "stealth game" (i'm looking at you, Last of Us) and then say that everything in the world works, when you can't even find a fast food store in Los Santos anymore (lookin' at you GTA5) without buying one out... and even then, you can't go inside all but one Chicken shop.

it's stuff liek that that disappoints me, personally. i've been let down alot more from other devs, then Nintendo, but again, solely my opinion, on the matter.

I see your point (and the hollow buildings in gta5 also piss me off though I personally disagree with the last of us not being innovative) but I also feel that Nintendo comes across as lazy when they can't even be bothered to come up with a single new IP. It's just mario, zelda, donkey kong, and pokemon and none of them ever evolve whatsoever, they just crank out 1,2,3,4,5,etc until they are just an embarrassment and a shadow of once great franchises.

Last of Us was sorta like Bioshock Infinite for me, because although they delivered on the great story and plots and gameplay; they didn't deliver on what i thought was the most innovating parts of their supposed delivery... the fact of your AI companion being more then just a useful idiot, that gets things for you and talks to you meanderingly... i mean, they were supposed to be immersing interactive parts of the game, and that aspect of BOTH games (for example) were broken, to me, anyways. i mean, in Last of Us, for example, the girl could be running around Clickers making noises and bumping into them and shit, and nothing is done, but then i make the wrong move a room away, and all of a sudden they come running when i was A: in stealth mode, and B: never coming into contact with any bottles or movable objects; pretty much like a glitch.

i am definitely not saying the games were bad, or not innovative enough... they just didn't deliver the specific innovations they promised.

but about Nintendo, i kinda agree on some level, because i wanna see something new from them; which is why they got Platinum Games on board, and are trying to get more second party devs to work on the WiiU... but they aren't doing much about it THEMSELVES; i can agree with you on that.

but aren't devs supposed to stick with what they're good at?

devs should stick to what they're good at, I just question if Nintendo is still good at it. rehashing the same games just doesn't cut it anymore, at least for me.

Take Capcom for instance, they've released what, like 3 versions of street fighter 4? yet believe it or not they are actually about to release ANOTHER one! when all they do is add a couple characters and maybe a few new maps. Ridiculous. Granted Nintendo isn't QUITE at that point yet, but I can definitely see them making their way there.

i hope ALL that gets finished up over NEW ip, but... honestly, do i WANNA see Mario change? i dunno if i do.

I agree about Mario not really needing to change too much, as it's extremely basic, but what about something like Pokemon?

Instead of adding more terrible excuses for pokemon and just changing the names of the bad guys and region, couldn't they instead have another game studio take a shot at reinventing it while still maintaining the rights?

A current gen 3d open world(think Bethesda) pokemon game has always sounded pretty appealing to me :awesomenod:
capturing and battling pokemon in real time and traveling to different gyms to get all the badges. Still would maintain the essence of the franchise while breathing new life into it as well. Because X and Y look terrible.

If Nintendo wishes to not fall behind and be boxed out of the console market completely, they're going to need to start appealing to people besides the "die hard buy anything by Nintendo" fans.. and 10 year olds.

btw good thread akira.

they could fall behind, like you said. i wouldn't care. they've been around longer then anybody on the market still. right? :awesomenod: sometimes even the giants, they fall. when they do, all the talented people that work there will move on to new and possibly (probably) more exciting projects!

just look at Platinum Games... all their games are pretty old school BUT unique in all sorts of different respects... alot of the people that work at Platinum Games came from the flailing Capcom.

i mean, my point is, if Nintendo falls, then it's not gonna be like the end of an era, type dealie, for me anyways... i don't work there, and i was a child of the Sega vs Nintendo wars, so i didn't have a particular childhood attachment to Nintendo, so much as i did just... well all games in general, LOL...

the talent will just move on and maybe it'd be the best thing that happened? maybe. :yesnod:

i'll be with Nintendo till the end. :sadyes: even as they are foaming and grokking at the mouth.

People like Miyamoto would never be hired in today's Nintendo. All their quirky stuff is done in games that your only supposed to play for 15 minutes each. Everything else pretty much sticks to the same formula, going up in quality but down in fulfillment with each iteration. Not to mention the guy that does Zelda's hasn't done one since Majora's Mask, so all of them come up easy and have immersion breaking features galore, which again shows they're hiring people that are way too smart and don't play the things and judge them from a gamers standpoint.

The third party games from last gen came up short as well.  All of the brawlers that should have been amazing felt like games for 5 years old's with mature themes slapped on them for adults. Like we get that autistic people test your games, but do they also test the third party games? Is that why they're extremely easy outside of boss fights?

One of the hallmark games for that gen was supposed to be conduit and it was simply the wooooorrst fps I have ever played and was a clunky glitchy mess with no feasible way to make the moving/aiming any better. The fact it got any recognition by wii players only ruined a wii owners reputation. Compared to the call of duty franchise that was simply too afraid to advertise for the system, because the games looked so radically different from the commercials.

The hardware is cool to play with usually, but it just lacks in certain area's.  Games that looked good on the wii in single looked absolutely dreadful in split screen, because of the low resolution and the lackluster GPU. I mean plenty of ps3 games play in 480p and don't look half as bad as the Wii games.  The Wii was loading textures, assets on screen in games like Xenoblade and Call of duty simply because there wasn't enough speed to display bushes or sign textures before you looked that way...and I don't think I'll ever forget the blockyness of that first 007 game. When the 2nd Golden Eye came out it looked like it was done on a new system.

So yeah, the wii's lackluster software sales was partly to blame by both Nintendo AND 3rd party. I think also they failed to advertise ANY games on that system. I don't remember one game from that system advertised ever. And it showed with third party software doing so poorly and the studio's and publishers disappearing over night while the developers were sleeping.

Even now the Wii U might have dedicated sound and more memory, but it's still lacking in overall speed. My laptop from five years ago technically has more power(intel first off) and it's definitely not meant for gaming. If you played Black Ops 2 on Wii U you'd still see assets popping in on kill cam if someone did a thrown drone strike across the map. I know they just ported the game, but should that really still be a thing when you have double the memory of other consoles? To be honest does anyone on any console anywhere care about assets popping in? They used to have fog of war, but now it's just common place for a bush or a air conditioner to show up out of thin air. And to be honest the FPS was going up and down, though you couldn't notice it. Why I have no idea, but rushed ports simply didn't have a steady FPS last November compared to the other systems.

Also the Wii U uses blu-ray disc, but it only has usb 2.0 ports, so it's dumb to install anything into an external harddrive. Usb 2.0 will simply be too slow when games start taking advantage of the system, but that may be curtailed by the fact the system isn't that fast to begin with, the use of shaders, sound card and more memory aside 1.2 tri-cores is pretty shitty, it's doing parallel programming, but that doesn't mean its 3.6ghz. It's simply just three cores operating together. Why they weren't a little bit faster, no one knows. Sony and Microsoft use double the cores on gaming and they are at least nearing 2ghz, why didn't Nintendo see that coming? And are Online games going to be held up by people using usb 2.0?

And the new button schemes on the systems aren't that great either. I feel like they should have copied the xbox's stick lay out and then just had two buttons above. I don't understand why four buttons are useful, you can't press them all at once so why even have them? If you need to reload in a shooter why not depress the other stick?

So yeah Nintendo has finally gone easy on the eyes again and it's backwards compatible, but it's still far from perfect IMO it's pretty much just approachable at this point.

yeah, i can definitely say, they're EAD departments are so heavily structured, nothing new breaks through from below the corporate junction on the ladder up.

but alot of people at Nintendo keep re-iterating that so and so is stepping down and is gonna let other people take control of the project; but yet they don't really get any of their own. they're always looking to one of the heads (Miyamoto, Koji ect) because they aren't really going for expressing innovation, unless it's by "the Nintendo code" which is casually and slowly eking it's way to retirement.

maybe it's because everyone has to defer to these heads, or maybe it's because the heads themselves aren't doing it? who knows? i dunno; do they actually HAVE the talent in the workforce, beyond the "big heads".

that's what i wonder, because you guys are right, they really don't go out of their way for ANYTHING.

There is talent definitely. Donkey Kong's hair isn't going to style itself...

Mario looks decent, but I'm probably going to rent it and pick up Wonderful 101 instead. That game needs some major sales, it did horrible in Japan. I'll probably pick up Bayonetta 2 as well, because I also liked Vanquish and Madworld. Basically I'm not buying any first party games unless they're the really big ones.

Yeah, I was lying in bed thinking about it and compared to the other consoles you really are getting a deal, it's just some people might not like looking down at the controller or want all the third party stuff other consoles have to offer,it's sad but the Wii U can't really get any lower in price.

Unlike the Wii which sold for like 220$ new the second year and had 10 million units by then.

Well my friend hung out with me the other day so I cornered him and made him take me to gamestop to buy Mario

All I can say is Wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii uuuuuu!:yesnod:

Exploring levels for collectables is pretty fun and my friend enjoyed the game even though he's more of a M-rated gamer.

Worth the twenty bucks I spent after I re-sell the game definitely!

Will probably get several more sessions out of it, I'm very meticulous.

damn son it's february and I've been playing this game for a minute

this game is like a mario addicts dream

OVERALL I think this is the best one I've played in 20 years, I liked 'sunshine' but i dunno I never replayed it.

I can see now why some sites said it was the game of the year.

I've only gotten like several hours in, in w101 which is like a video-gamers game, but it's 30 bucks for a physical copy.

The Mario franchise is the biggest reason for me to want to get a Wii u. That and playing Wii titles on a HDMI monitor. 3D land for 3DS was awesome and I'm a big fan of the New Super Mario Bros series.
