Home made dehydrator questions
    #19033009 - 10/25/13 08:21 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

I made this dehydrator as instructed by this guide: http://www.shroomery.org/8411/The-Magic-Mushrooms-Growers-Guide
It cost me 4p and an afternoon.

This is a failed attempt to try an Amanita Muscaria. It's no loss as there are plenty more where they came from this time of year. Anyway, I used Kontrol Krystals, which is a brand of anhydrous calcium chloride, of which I placed a more then necessary amount onto a piece of cloth on some mesh held slightly above the bottom of an old tupperware bowl by modeling putty (Green Stuff). Above this was a second layer of mesh, balanced on four 1p coins attached to the sides of the tupperware (also with Green Stuff,) where the cap of the mushrooms is placed to dry.
One problem is that the calcium chloride is able to dissolve and filter through this cloth, rendering the whole thing useless, therefore I am considering buying filter paper designed for making coffee. Would this be a good idea?
The Amanita Muscaria hasn't completely dried and now really smells bad, like athletes foot x10, and is starting to go moldy. Obviously this needs disposing of, but when I picked it fresh from the wild and placed it to dry, the next few days tiny maggot like things fell from the downward facing gills, as displayed in the picture. Is this common, or a worry? Should this patch be avoided?
Finally, is this too much hassle for something that can be achieved much more easily, reliably and at a higher quality? I don't mind spending some money but this was only really a project but it may become more necessary in the near future.

I believe what you have there is actually a desiccant chamber. If this is the case it would be best to fan dry your fruits before placing them into the desiccant chamber to finish drying.

Hey can this be used :doublefu: or this :ass2mouth:
BTW sagescruffy's right you have to fan dry for around 24 hours before you can even place it in the chamber or it's just a waste of time

That container will work for dessicanting small amounts of mushy material. You need a way bigger desiccant-chamber though. The filter paper idea is uneccesary. I never try to desiccant-chamber mushys when they are real wet, i fan dry them first because they will start to stink in the chamber for the first couple days and takes longer if you just put them in wet. As said above you need to fan dry em a bit first.

What i do is i fan dry for a day or so, then i dehydrate the mushys at 125F overnight or just until cracker dry in a dehydrator like one pictured above.

For a desiccant chamber, i just put Damp-Rid(calcium chloride) crystals in a small wide shallow cup, just a bit. Set the cup of calcium chloride in any chamber of choice can be anything from a big kitchen bowl to a sterilite tub, depending on amount of mushys to be dried.

Tape a screen over the small cup of calcium chloride, so nothing can get in it, and throw your partly fan dried mushys in the chamber with it, set something on top of the chamber if it has no lid, and in just a couple days they will be cracker dry. Damp-Rid cup must be replaced with new damp-rid when it turns real liquidy.

Ive figured, just invest a quick $50 on a cheap food dehydrator with temp settings. I still fan dry a bit before i dehydrate, fan drying them first to get the initial % of h20 out is very recommended.

You do not need to fan dry before using a dehydrator. That's just wasting time.

OP: fan dry for 24 hours then put them in a desiccant chamber.

Ive found alot of my bigger caps will split a crack in them if i try to cram them into the dehydrator trays when real wet. And you can fit more in there if fan dried a bit first. Mostly because they dry in that crammed shape and come out all stuck together in a big crammed disc of dehydrated cracker dry mushys. Wish i had a pic to show you:lol: Sometimes its a mess trying to break apart seperate whole fruit bodies.

When i fan dry a bit of the moisture out first, then dehydrate, they dont stick together and instead stay seperate solid cracker dry fruit bodies. the pros just outweigh the cons all around

This is true, but the point is: who cares? Cracked caps work just as well as pretty ones. Also, when you get that big disc, just let it drop on the counter and it'll mostly come apart.

If my dehydrator fills up, I use a cardboard box with a box fan on it to partially dry my mushies before they go in the dehydrator. This ONLY happens when I fill my dehydrator though, and the only reason I do it is because it's best to have the extras started drying until there becomes room for them. The longer they sit with water in them, the more they lose magic.

The pros are prettier mushrooms. The cons are more loss in potency, which correlates to taking longer to dry, so it's a double-edged sword. It also takes more energy to run a fan for a night then put them in a dehydrator than it would to just put them in there to begin with.

Because you tried to threadjack, and if you'd have used the search engine in the time between posts, you'd have found your answer 100 times already.
