That smell is not good. Bacteria causes that smell. It could be that your casing is too wet

Could fruit just fine. Depends on how strong that smell is, and you'll never get a good answer by describing it. I've seen/smelt some funky things that eventually got beaten by myc and fruited. In general a very light alcohol smell is fine, but any pungent odor isn't.
