1. I'd say that's debatable but if you're doing brf cakes then don't substitute for rye or anything like that. The mycelium absolutely loves vermiculite and brown rice flour.
2. You probably won't need an incubator. The jars themselves will give off heat while colonizing so anywhere from 70-80 is okay i believe.
3. Search for a good lid tek, and yes 1/2 pint wide mouth jars are what's used.

The incubator question is hard to answer; the dynamics of the situation depend on too many factors (most imporantly, the design of your incubator). And it's unclear whether the temperature range (65-85) you are describing is outdoor, or the room/space you're using.
If you can at all avoid using the incubator, then avoid it. If the room gets as hot as 87 (since you say "ambient" I assume you mean the room) then you might want to find a cooler space. You definitely don't want to be using an incubator for only like 2 hours every day. It sounds like during the hottest parts of the day, the incubator is totally unnecesasry and risky. You don't want to increase you chances of contamination. Too much heat can do this.
Hope this helps; good luck.

if your just making pf cakes u dont need special filters on the lids, just the vermiculite on top.
if you dont have brown rice and its not local, you can ground rye or birdseed into flour to substitute if it saves you money

Don't mention vendors, its against the rules.
Brf cakes colonize quickly because of the smaller volume of substrate. They are no more potent than any other substrate. Potency is a result of genetics, not substrate.
Incubators are not needed. If you colonize at room temperatures the mycelium has a better shot than the bacteria of colonizing the grains.
Brf jars use vermiculite as a filter and a hole in lid as an injection port. Jars for grains like rye berries use the filters and ports in their lid designs.

You PC or steam-sterilize with the foil, to keep water and moisture out of your jars, thus throwing off your ratio.
You leave the foil on until you inoculate, and you remove the foil after inoculation.

ace1331 said: Long story short. 5 failed rye berry bags with B and Cambodian I'm starting anew. Just ordered some Cambodians again from a different place. I'm going to make jars since supposedly they are fool proof. I found a tek I like on brf in the jars. Is it true, on rye berries mycellium colonizes faster and are more potent than brf? 2nd question. I found plans for an incubator. The temp where I live goes from 65 to 85 throughout the day. I'm always trying to change the settings to keep it around high 70s but it just seems impossible. Question is, if I make an incubator, if its set to say 80, if the ambient air outside is say 87 will the temp inside remain 80 or average out between the 2. Last question, almost done. All the teks on brf or grain that use jars, there are different methods on the lids. Does it matter how I setup the lid? I wanted to use self injecting ports and the plastic filters that stick up and are specifically designed for gas exchange. Oh and I read to use 1/2 pint bc they colonize faster . Sorry for the novel but after 2 failed attempts I want to be solid this time. I really appreciate reading concerns or suggestions
1.grains colonize quicker because u can shake the jar and growth can continue from a colonized grain to an uncolonized one. this does not affect potency and yield.
2. 65-80 will work. dont use an incubator.
3. u can make injecting ports if you want. ive seen brf cakes grow contam free without any filters but this is because of the dry verm on top. make sure to keep a dry verm layer on top. 1/2 pint jars colonize faster and are less prone to stalling.

Let's Grow Mushrooms!
You need to do a lot more research. The link I posted is a very good place to start, so are the last two links in my signature.
