Hi everyone!
Well, I'm super excited... I've done several Pf tek grows with cubes, which led me to a love of mushrooms in general. So, I want to start small and learn to grow shiitakes to possibly supplement my income (legally). Eventually, I'd like to expand to a few other gourmet and medicinal varieties, but for now, I just want to focus on shiitakes. Also, I want to start with growing them indoors with sawdust (or whichever sub is best) and then eventually inoculate some logs for outdoor growing as well. See, I've already been doing a lot of reading! Anyway, as I said, the only mycology experience I have is with growing cubes. I am pretty ignorant when it comes to cloning, agar, LC's, etc. I get easily overwhelmed when learning a new technical skill because I have the tendency to get sidetracked very easily. So, I need to focus on one aspect at a time. I'm not asking for anyone to hold my hand through this, but I am asking for someone to point me in the right direction.... what do I need to begin reading first? Links would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Here's a link to get started. It's probably easier to purchase plugs from a shroomery vendor (I chose Everything Mushrooms) and follow this links' instructions. After a couple hours work, you can just wait for the shiitake to grow outside (and year after year). It worked well for me.
Outdoor log grows require less time to learn, but more time to wait until harvest. Indoors? The PFTek works with some easy modifications for Shiitake. If you want to learn from the best, Roger Rabbits' videos are available to DL at a low, low price! And well worth it to learn what you need to know. Just look for one of his posts for the link.

Thanks! I just finished reading that... very informative.
I'm not actually going to cut a live tree for this purpose, but I'm sure I could get some logs if I ask the city workers to keep an eye out for me. So, I definitely want to start with an indoor cultivation technique. I'd like to start with a basic tek and work my way up from there. Now, since I won't be able to start this variety from spores (bummer), what will I be ordering? Will I still purchase the inoculated wooden dowels, and then transfer them to grain or sawdust, or are there other options?
Also, as for the different strains of shiitake.... are there major differences in flavor? When choosing a strain, I certainly want one that is productive, but I don't want to sacrifice quality for quantity.
For shiitakes, is there any certain indoor technique that is considered superior to others? And also, is there any difference in quality between fruits grown indoors from sawdust or other substrate and those that are grown outdoors from logs?
I think I have about 10 other question in queue, but I'm going to stop there for now. Told you, I get side tracked very easy :p
Thanks again!
