I've noticed if you boil too long they will burst. Remember boiling is just to finish the water absorbing process a little but mostly it to make the grains hot for proper evaporation in strainers

Yeah, thats exactly what happened, I normally let them go until just a few have burst say 10% or so, this time i just let it go a bit too long and its more than usual.. are they still ok to use?

they might work ok but you could see problems with them being to wet from water leaking out the bursted seeds. Also shaking them could get slimy and messy

Some of my WBS exploded but i still had good success in colonization. I mean hey, mycelium will eat manure.. i don't think they're too picky about whether their grains are busted or not. :P

Long as it doesnt just keep getting wetter and wetter in the jars u'll be fine.
If you could start over that would be best but if ya cant then o-well it may fail and you'll just have to do it again. sometimes patience can really be key in this hobby.

I recently started using rye and made the same mistake my first go at it. About half the jars came out of the PC with a large clump at the bottom. However, those jars colonized just as quickly as the rest, some quicker, even as i could not shake loose the clump. It turned out fine, though just one instance. Exploded rye is more contam prone ive read, but if you sterilized properly and its not obviously over-wet, i say give them their shot.
