    #19030912 - 10/25/13 12:38 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

I changed this thread because the only interesting mushrooms are the pins.

Even if they are just "Galerina" could we get some measurements and maybe a spore print. I would like to try and delineate the species, if possible.

Those are some awesome pics.

Although it is possible, most psilocybe species don't grown directly on rotting logs. They tend to like more fresh wood chips. P. cyanesens, for example, is believed to be a first gen saprophyte opening up the doorway for other species to start their decomposition of the ligneous material.

I am not exactly aware of what active species you should be looking for in Ohio though.

I think Psilocybe ovoideocystidiata and a couple variants grow in your area. They should have a majorly noticeable bruising reaction and produce purple brown to purple black spore prints.

The IMO the OP is definitely not ovoids.

Right on! TY BlueFunGuy!!! So those are supposed to be edible? Or only the cultivated ones? Or am I confusing Enoki with Enokitake?

Why not?  They have an excellent subtle flavor.  The stems are very stringy though, so leave those out.  Let them get a bit bigger and see what you think.

Thank you very mush Blue-FunGuy!!!:murray:yeah patience MIGHT have been the key for me. Its unlikely that it will grow I think but none the less its a nice specimen and first Possible Gymnopilus Anything Ive found  I really appreciate the vote of confidence! I picked the bluing pin off do you think that will stunt the growth or help it? I didnt think much of it until it was too late. I am excited though. This will make a good picture subject! I will check it daily and hopefully well see it open up before it gets too cold here. Its reaching lower 40s at night.

They should keep growing until the temps get below freezing and I don't think picking that pin will affect much, looks like an abort imo.

Right on! Gonna be a fun next couple weeks  I watered the log pouring it in the top cracks with three bottles. The Galerina marginata and Polyporus squamosus will like that too

Yeah either way if they get worse I will pick the pin for study. Im still convinced they are Gymnopilus. You can see definite bruising green on the bigger one.

I keep thinking to myself. Maybe they are slow growers. Maybe since I found these pins there are others out there somewhere around me. I been searching hard! These are the only pins I have found that look like this! No where else in a five mile radius that im aware of has anything like them. Im hoping they are waiting for the Gallerina to die off and then boom out! Im under the belief that where I live Gallerina fruits first then gymns because I only find Gallerina and Enokitake most places I go, none of the woodchip areas I hunt have any action.i just dont get it. Am I missing something? Am I too late? Too early? In a shitty place for them all together?:llamastare:

well, i found one dried out bunch. and i looked alot, but perhaps not in the best places.  widely distributed doesn't necessarily mean common to find i guess.
we had such a dry sept. it might be that since they're mustering up the energy to fruit during that time they just didn't get enough moisture this year around here to do much.  That said, the galerina were doing just fine, weren't they.  but, you'd have to look for several years running to get an idea whether they were normal or not.

there's always next year!

I will see next year I guess. Thanx for your update since we arent far from each other its very reference able. Since u found dry ones it makes me think youre right about September being too dry. These pins look like they will keep going and they are bigger than before if u look at the previous pics. So im probably picking the negative possibility because of being impatient. The Galerina seem to be doing just fine lol!

If you grab it make sure you cut it close to the log.
Don't yank it out, this could hurt the mycelium network in the log.

thats me.  mr. motivation.

i forgot to add, for the first time (in 30yrs anyway) i actually got so lost in the woods i had to turn on gps and follow the little arrow crosscountry to get out.  the only other time i was that lost i was with buds in Daniel Boone Nat'l forest in KY and we had full packs and gear so it was no big deal.  it took awhile but with topo maps and compasses it was actually the funnest part of the outing. (for the kids that think they have it rough, thats how it used to work, no gps and google maps)
This was a state nature preserve so the trails were not well marked and with the leaf litter i must have missed my branch on the way back and wound up waaaay not where i thought i was.  way WAY, like a mile away...  Its a cool place though, and i'll check it out next year again.  its only about 30min from home.

Congrats on finding some gyms finally xfsketch

It may have took you a while but consider yourself lucky. Ive been hunting for over 6 years and only found a gymnopilus species one time a very long time ago before i could identify it. They are at the top of my to find list but i never find any.

Summary: Potent Ohio Gyms

These are the potent Big Laughing Gyms from Ohio mentioned by Arora in Mushrooms Demystified.

“An Ohio woman had an unforgettable experience after inadvertently nibbling on one. She found herself in an alien world of fantastic shapes and glorious colors, and while concerned friends were rushing her to the hospital, she was heard to mutter, “If this is the way you die from mushroom poisoning, then I’m all for it…” (Arora, 410).

They are not especially large. An average cap is about 2 inches across, and large specimens are rarely more than four inches in diameter. The smell is fruity spicy and the flavor very bitter. They come out in successive flushes from late August through September, and smaller sporadic fruitings continuing into November. Larger colonies also fruit once in early to mid June. They prefer well rotted hardwood logs usually covered with a little moss, but they can occasionally be found growing from standing dead trees. They are most abundant in shady bottom areas along small streams but can be found anywhere that is moist and shady enough for moss to cover the fallen logs.

There is another kind of Big Laughing Gym here in Ohio which smells the same but it is larger, oranger, and not nearly as potent. These small potent gyms are far more common and sometimes the pins bruise blue. The bluing reaction is variable, with specimens from the same log sometimes bruising blue and sometimes not bruising blue.

Big laughing Gyms were the quarry I sought when I began mushroom hunting over ten years ago. They were also my first encounter with the species problem. According to Arora’s key to Gymnolpilus, if the mushroom bruises blue then it is G. aeruginosus, if not, then it is G. spetabilis, which Arora calls a “species complex”. However, the full grown mushrooms never bruise blue, only the pins, so if Arora’s key is correct, then a single mushroom changes species from G. aeruginosus to G. spectabilis as it matures.

I don’t think G. aeruginosis is in Ohio at all (if it is even a distinct species, whatever a species is). At least I have never found it here in ten years of searching.

Info from this link.

That Guy Walt on MO has found a lot of gymns in Ohio.... are you near that park that is listed as the collection location?  Areas around there I bet would be very good...

Heres what they looked like today.
I figured i might as well cut the big one and disect it. It is yellow inside with heavy bruising green and blue outside. The gills were just starting to develop. I did my best to peel away enough to try for a spore print. I doubt it got far enough to produce any? It smells peppery. Im almost 100% sure these are G. luteus

They are dropping moisture and the pins cap let off a rusty brown puddle so far and the stem let off a grey blue puddle.
