Question about applying for jobs
    #19030023 - 10/25/13 08:33 AM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Is it better to look on Craigslist or to just go to an area and walk into businesses and apply in person?

New question

Should I call up stores and ask them if they're hiring? Seems to be the most logical option.

All I have is a GED and the only work experience I can reference is my Uncle's business because he's willing to say what's necessary to help me out. But it still boils down to a single entity.

i was in the same boat. ged, no experience. i was always able to find work through temp services, but 80% of the time, those jobs sucked. i always find my self on a fork lift in a crappy warehouse job making 500 a week.

if school is an option, i say look into that. even if its just a trade school.

That's good to me! One of my last jobs, I was making 80 dollars a week and I was happy with that! I hadn't thought aabout temp services, I thought it was like a corporate thing, so I appreciate your advice. How temporary are the temp jobs?

it all depends. around here they have temporary jobs that last a couple days or weeks and then they have the temp to hire jobs. they place you, you stick around for the 90 days and that company hires you. doesnt always work like that, but thats the general idea. just google search temp services in your area then start calling all of them. ask what they have available and if you can fill out an app online.

just a heads up. 90% of all temp services drug test.

Not a problem. When you have no money, you don't do drugs.

Pick a place you want to work, doesn't matter if they say their hireing or not. Go in and fill out the application and talk with them. That's the best way. Learn about the company, lean about the position you'll be applying for, and convince them that your the one for the job. Alot of companies will hire a person they like even if they don't have a spot open.

This was my life from 17-26, got fed up with it, and now I'm studying. Not that there's anything wrong with warehouse/terminal jobs, it's just that I'm not going to drive a fucking forklift for the rest of my life

same. got my first warehouse job in 07 and learned all there is to know about jobs like that while i was there. from then on it was easy to get warehouse jobs. one thing i did notice though was that all that cats that have been there for 20+ years were only making around 20.00 an hour. thats nice when compared to my 10.00 an hour, but what the fuck! not even worth it... once i get some shit in order i plan on going back to school. not sure for what though.

I agree with poorboy, go to trade school. I never finished highschool but was lucky enough to learn a trade when I was relatively young. Now I make 27$ an hour. Look into in, it's worth it.

I worked construction most of my life. Its good to learn a good work ethic and sometimes make good money but I wouldn't want it for a career. I would try electrician or maybe controls tech if I were to do a trade job.

The great thing about these kind of trade jobs is that if you're really good at it you can get hired by some huge construction multinational and get to work on projects all over the world. One of my buddies is a welder and right now he's in Germany welding and putting windmills together. Huge money and great travels !

Go to trade school.  I'm always amazed at what it costs just to get a tradesman to come to my house (electrician, plumber, carpenter, etc.)

As far as applying goes, it depends on the job.  You probably don't want to walk into a corporate office just asking to be hired.  Suit jobs don't usually work that way.
