Interesting little experience

|

I was walking in my town and this man was standing by the sidewalk and he didn't have a nose, there was just a big hole in his face. As I passed right by him he asked me which direction the next town was in. I just kept walking and ignored him and as I walked past him he started to mutter curse words. I never made eye contact with him at any point. When I initially saw him from a distance I decided to just act as if he wasn't there (cuz looking at him freaked me out).

I thought it was amusing that he cursed me out. He was like, "I know I don't have a nose! You're not the first person to ignore me! Woe is me!" (that's not exactly what he said).

It's a thought provoking conversation though I think. I know I've struggled with this kind of thing at work before. I work in customer service and I observe in myself sometimes that I will be less likely to approach customers that make me feel uncomfortable. Like people who may or may not speak english, or people with uncomfortable disabilities. I helped a lady at work the other day who had parkinsons and was about to fall down on the ground. I kept having to talk her into sitting down. It was pretty uncomfortable, but I also felt compassion for her.

that's what it comes down to--being aware of the sufferings of others, and sympathizing with them
The Buddha was reputedly asked by his personal attendant, Ananda, "Would it be true to say that the cultivation of loving kindness and compassion is a part of our practice?" To which the Buddha replied, "No. It would not be true to say that the cultivation of loving kindness and compassion is part of our practice. It would be true to say that the cultivation of loving kindness and compassion is all of our practice."
Also, compassion towards others is directly connected to self-compassion--one cannot exist without the other--if nothing else, make this a reason to cultivate compassion.

For real. Its unfortunate that your first reaction was to ignore someone who was in need of help because of their outlandish appearance.
One time in San Francisco, I sat and had a convo with an obviously mentally ill homeless man just because I was curious what he had to say. Most of it was nonsense to me but at the end of his ranting he got all choked up and genuinely thanked me for talking and listening to him like a human being. He said he couldn't remember the last time someone treated him with that kind of common decency. Shit like makes me feel like a real misanthrope sometimes. Somewhere underneath that weird and disfigured exterior is a human being, who probably has had to live his life as an outcast and experience hardships and depths of loneliness most people couldn't imagine.
But its his responsibility to cover up his face because it makes you uncomfortable?
OP, you suck.

Social etiquette...
I'd also like to say that I think that people should give homeless people money, because in many cases there are literally no other options. Even if it's just for bus fare to an area that has a soup kitchen, if they're currently in an area without one.

meh, I don't give a flying fuck about what some people consider social etiquette.
Op, In a way I can understand were you are coming from though, being confronted with and something unknown and unfamiliar and not knowing how to react. Situations like that bring to light aspects of your personality that you might not have known about yourself. The only thing to do now is learn from the experience. You don't suck. The way our society as a whole treats these social pariahs sucks.

On a side note. I almost never give money to panhandlers. Shit I barely have enough change for my own beer lol. I try to decline nicely but sometimes mothafuckas get aggressive and its just better to ignore them

assholes ignore people. i find it offensive, like today when i was going to get in my car in the parking lot of the grocery store and had to wait because a dude whose car was next to mine was opening his passenger door, doing something. i didn't mind at all that i had to wait but the fact that he didn't even make eye contact with me to acknowledge my physical existence while we're mere feet from each other showed that he was an asshole.

that makes me actually wanna say "hey asshole" out loud. you should try it sometime. you don't need any other words for a person like that. just "hey asshole" and maybe a gesture of like hand waving "move the fuck outta the way".

i actually did say "okay just ignore me" and have started saying things like that in situations like these. over the past few months i've lost almost all tolerance for rude mother fuckers.
it's rich, i was actually standing there smiling as i waited, but wasn't even glanced at.

In response to the original topic, there's nothing wrong with ignoring someone with a hole in their face because you're not comfortable looking at them. Simple as that.

There is something fundamentally wrong with the way you think. This isn't a subjective opinion. It's an objective fact.

the best part was when he said, "but what if i'm planning on tripping tomorrow and i don't wanna bad trip to happening because i'm thinking about hole face!"
that's the best. you plan everything in your life. sweet way to live. even if you're dead inside.

By the way, this guy eventually got a plastic surgery nose. I had seen him prior to the scenario in the first post and I've seen him after he got his nose. He even came and sat down on a bench that I was sitting on, but I don't know if he recognized me. I was reading a book and he just sat down to eat something he had just purchased at the supermarket or something. By the way, the first time I saw him it really disturbed me and I had trouble getting his image out of my head for a little while.
