using really old, dry prints
    #19029507 - 10/25/13 03:18 AM (10 years, 3 months ago)

I have several spore prints that I've collected & received from friends - some are probably 2-3 years old, all are on foil, and each individual print is in a little tiny ziplock bag still inside the letter envelope in which I received it (they were all mailed to me). I keep all these envelopes with the spore prints in a drawer in my kitchen.

Just so I don't delve into a fruitless endeavor, is there a point at which the spore prints are no longer viable?  Are there any special measures I should take with a really old & dry spore print versus just taking an inoc loop and swiping it over the petri?  (like does it need to be re-hydrated in some way, and if so how?)

thanks :mushroom2:

Even though you should of kept them in cool temps they should be fine...you could use syringe, let them hydrate for 24 hrs, and inoc but agar would be your best bet in this case.

you mean squirt some sterilized water onto the print and let it sit out on a table out of the little ziplock bag & soak up the water over the next 24 hours?  how many cc's of water?  I'm guessing really a few drops is all it needs, no sense to totally soak the print or anything    ??

He was talking about making a spore syringe.

And spore prints can last for many years if stored properly. Ive heard well over ten years.

oh sorry about that - nah, i don't want to make a spore syringe, i just want to take my old prints and put them onto agar.  i was just concerned that they are so old and so dry (a few of them I know for a fact are about 2-3 yrs old) that they would need to be re-hydrated in some way before swiping them into a petri dish.  if they'll work as-is just like a fresh print would, then that's good news :cool:

You dont need to rehydrate them. Straight to agar will do :wink:
