Any Toadstool Tester"s Here ?
    #19029804 - 10/25/13 07:07 AM (10 years, 8 months ago)

Just Curious, any toadstool tester in here? I have been collecting for over 30 years and have tried, experimented, tested many different species of fungi. Have you ever experimented with unkown edibles and how many species of mushrooms have you tried edible and actives . My list would fill pages and pages.
I'd like to hear your experiences trying new mushrooms for the first time especially if it was  listed as UNKOWN EDIBILITY Or Edible.
Also have you ever poisoned your self on mushrooms?. I have on a few Times now. Hazard of a toadstool tester. Id like to here your stories.
One mushroom that I have tried listed as unkown is Ischnoderma resinosum. Also known as the the Resinous Polypore. In most field guides it is listed and inedible in most field guides. I had never seen this before until I moved to the East Coast from the West Coast.
My first experience with this species was at my first Foray on East Coast. I met a Finnish couple and we were collecting together when we came across this fallen Beech tree that was in somewhat of an advanced form of decomposition. On the log were shelving Resinous Polypore. This couple just lit up. They were almost doing somersault's. I tried to explain to them that it was considered inedible and they broke a piece off and shoved in my face sayin smell smell, The smell was wonderful like vanilla or kind of like fennel too very sweet.
They showed me a way to prepare them which I did. Let me tell you
they are the best. Vegans this is your meat. very steak like juicy tasty intense. It is truly one of my favorite mushrooms and its out right now.

I have heard several times this year that Is Ischnoderma resinosum is delicious. I think I'll try it next year, it does smell very nice.

Great to know about Ischnoderma resinosum tasting great, I will definetly try that.
I believe I have tried around 30 species of mushrooms, one of the more recent ones was part of the Amanita vaginata species complex... Tasted really good, kind of like muscaria. I saved some dried material for Rod Tulloss and took some detailed shots of how Loosely the volva attaches to the stem base... Just have to see if he wants it and send it.

I've made and like broth from Resinous polypore. I know someone that has also eaten it and ended up with the shits from eating it, I've been hesitant about eating it because of this, it's nice to hear other experiences with this mushroom, I'll try eating a little if I come across some.

I guese I could of been more spacifice. Preparation is easy just cut into thin slices and sutay in Olive oil and Shallots and a bit of white wine. Also using the fresh new growth is is what you want to eat. Also Ihave notice they keep making new flesh after you slice them for awhile untile they get mature. Another way I have seen is to beat the tugher ones with a meat tenderizer. I was told it was like Abalone substatute.

Some time I belive that some of these cases of the shits is more a sinsitivity in the indiviual. I know some one that eats the store bought Agaricus and gets the mean shits but then she can eat all the morel she can find and other mushrooms with out any problems. But Agaricus's tear her up. Sorry about he spelling my spell check is not working

Yeah, it's probably just something peculiar to him. This thread reminded me that I may have been a bit overly cautious.  I've tried a bunch of mushrooms, another one that I've made broth out of is Thin Maze Polypore, Daedaleopsis confragosa it's very good, sometimes if it's a dry August, it's the only thing worth eating, I'll find.

So when you mean broth your not actually eating the mushroom? I have Daedaleopsis confiragosa  on the property. and just checked them out the other day and they seem moist but tough. There growing on some dead birch limbs. Give me a recepe you just boil them in water? your giving me an idea for Rock Tripe mushroom soup.

Most field guides are overly cautious and list many good edible species as toxic.  Maybe they are worried about lawsuits.

One of the best edibles out there is Amanita rubescens sensu auct. amer.  Every time I cook up a ton of choice edibles, that one wins easily.

Yep just boil them up in water and use the broth to flavor other things, I usually do this when they are young. Haven't tried it on the older mushrooms.

absolutely one of the best Amanita I have ever tried.  According to Rod Tollose there are some anti clotting substances in them so they have to be well cooked.and another person told me it is best to cook them in an open pan.

does it matter how big the individual fungus is (if you're shaving off the end bits) or do you target younger, smaller ones?

i was impressed with how healthy these seemed to be, biggest group i've seen so i took a beauty shot but there are plenty more around to let these ones be

steak huh...  might have to try one
thanks for the heads-up

The yougest one are best. Some can get somewhat big and still remain soft. I ususlly go about one to two inches back. and just cut like a strip YOu can kind of see were the soft flesh is. its like in zones. The lighter zones are in front/  There soft and squishy. The farther you go back to the base they become leathery.

Sarcoscypha Coccinea A very beautiful cup fungi, is another species listed in guides as unkonwn  questionable to non poisonous, that is easly found and im sure some of you hopeful Morel hunters may have run into them, right before the season actually starts. I fined these year after year. There very easy to spot,I have always found them growing on downed Basswood usually some what deomposed.
I noticed that they were some what fleshy to the point of cautiouse eparementation. Perhaps this is a myth but in my mind RED means DANGER DANGER so i some what geeked out on this one in terms of my carfule cautious experrimentation. At the time I had access to equipment that would read blood values. I did a base line CBC{compleat blood count) And A chem panal that encluded  ALT (alanine aminotransforase),Bilirubin, Albumin, clotting times, Bun(Blood urea Nitrogen) and Creatinine. I made a Baseline of my self which all were in noramal limits. Then I took one fungi cup and sliced  it up  in strips and sauteed it in olive oil. Then 24 hr later all was well,I  did the same test. Then again at 48 hr. All were normal and this mushroom was tasing quite good. So I made a whole meal with them making a stir fry with shrimp and vegatables. The red color remains after cooking them so they make the stir fry have a bit of color to it. The tast fantastic. Very Morel like in flavore but better. A little gritty. But hey, goes with the territory, they say that will help your teeth. After the Meal I did not experince any discomfort I did the same test 24, 36,48, and one week after the meal. OK Ok  I really geeked out.
But Im very convenced that this fungi known as the Scarlet Cup are compleaty harmless and they are very tasty. I look forward ever spring
in Late March early april for these to appear. I eat them regularly now. I have fried them packed them stuffed them. All is good.
