water pooling in jars, possible contam w/pics
    #19029762 - 10/25/13 06:44 AM (10 years, 3 months ago)

so i guess i fucked up my last 2 batches of jars ):

i realized that no myc was growing at all, and upon further inspection, all of the jars have way too much moisture. theres water pooling at the bottom of most of the jars :/

is there still any chance that these jars will colonize?

im also afraid that bacterial contams will take over due to the moisture content. in fact, two of the jars have a slightly white/yellowish goopy looking substance surrounding some of the seeds where the myc dripped down the side of the jar. is this a bacterial contam? it looks more white than yellow, and the yellow may just be the color of the seeds showing through, but im not positive.

heres a picture showing what i mean.. let me know what you guys think. and whether or not i should pull that guy out of the tub immediately!

edit: also, i let the WBS dry for nearly 5 hours, but the outside was still slightly wet.. is there anything i can do to help the drying process? i think its too cold and the air is too still for optimal drying conditions..

The wet slimy stuff doesn't look good or right that's for sure. When drying rye I find it best to keep them in a heap in a strainer so the internal temp of the heap helps keep them hot enough to evaporate then keep stirring the heap every 5mins or so. Rather than spreading them out thin where they seem to cool faster than they dry. I dunno if WBS works the same way though.

After simmering the wbs on the stove after a 24 hr soak, I used to dry my bird seed the way you guys are talking about (spreading it out thin to dry out, which would often take an entire overnight period - which would then result in it getting too dry, I just couldn't get it all the way right since I wasn't allowing it to steam itself dry because I didn't have a big enough colander/strainer to contain all the bird seed).

Then one day I read a suggestion on here to get one of those paint strainer bags, like you can get at Lowe's or Home Depot.  And this was exactly the thing I needed - now after simmering, I can just dump the bird seed in the paint straining bag, then I shake the bag once every 10-15 minutes, and the wbs steams itself dry in just a little over an hour, and it's at the perfect moisture level to go into the jars.  I put a colander and set it inside a bucket, and place the paint straining bag into the colander so it can drip dry into the bucket in between those shakes I give it.  Doing this process will get your wbs the right moisture level (not too wet, not too dry) and keep your jars from developing bacteria from being too wet.

hope this made sense in a non-rambling way haha  :jah:

I would start over too much moisture is not ever going to end well.  All the teks I read say that they need to be dry enough to sit on a piece of toilet paper and not leave a mark.

OP, that's certainly bacterial contamination.

PsiLisaBin, good idea with the strainer bags! I always have way too much grain to ever fit in a colander/strainer...

luckily i have a few batches going and only the latest two are too wet. real bummer tho :/ ill be doing 12 more quart jars this weekend tho so ill make sure they are dry before loading em up. gotta be a little more patient i guess. ironic too that my girlfriend told me not to load those jars. that i was being too hasty even tho i had waited 5 hours. guess i should learn to listen to her sometimes as well :p

thanks for the info guys!

now about the jar with the weird white goop.. any ideas on that bad boy?

thats what i feared ): can bacterial contams spread to other jars?

and if i leave it.. is there any chance myc will take over?

If the other jars aren't already contaminated, no. Contams won't jump between jars.

I don't think so... it looks too wet. I have seen myc overcome bacterial contam (and fruit!), but with contam that advanced, its unlikely the myc will win. If you feel like having a stinky jar of rotting grain hanging around in your house, don't let me stop you.

If you have other jars that look better just toss that one, and if you need more spawn, do GTG transfers.
