but you dont throw manure in a jar pressure cook it and inoculate it.
And you dont pasteurize a bunch of rye berries and use them like you would manure.
rye is spawn....manure is substrate.

And you dont pasturized a bunch of rye berries and use them like you would manure.
But if you have a bunch of cased rye in a tray, and someone asked you what is the substrate, the answer would be rye.
You would not say spawn....and If someone asked you what the spawn was, you would say I did not spawn anything....it's just cased rye.
With your logic, anything that is sterilized is spawn, and anything that is pasteurized is substrate....

You keep saying this, and in some cases it is correct, but not in all cases.
Just because I do not want to do this all night I am going to agree to disagree.
Because I still don't think you get it.

none you you people even answered the OP question you hijacked his thread just to argue about something you know i'm also right on. He was comparing rye berries to manure. All he wanted was some opinions on peoples preferences but you guys have to argue and not help him.....great job

Yes, rye is always to be considered spawn, no matter what, just because you said so....
To answer OP's question, my preference is WBS for the inoculation points, I know of no brands to avoid, and follow the teks.

I use whatever local materials I can for making substrates. I also live in the country, so manure is easy to get, especially horse manure in great quantity for free. So I end up using that a lot in many of my substrates.
Often I mix horse manure with shredded plant material from my neighborhood. Some of the things i've tried that worked really well:
- Cannabis stalk chips - Cannabis root ball - Burdock stalk chips + Burr balls (flowers) - Japanese Knotweed stalk chipped - Lawn clippings - Tree leaves shredded and whole - Garlic stalk chipped - Egg carton cardboard blended
Etc, etc.
Basically any chipped plant stalk will fruit mushrooms in general and Cubensis in particular quite well. Adding things like horse manure and egg carton pulp to the shredded plant chips, even though its not mandatory, seems to make for an even better harvest.
Depending on where you live, there can be lots of prime materials for making substrates...especially if you live anywhere near a farm. Even if you don't live near a farm, there are lots of "weeds" and plants that you can chip/shred and grow shrooms on.
Its all good to go to the store every time and buy everything you need for the hobby... but its also cool to use local, free materials.
Try some experiments.

Ok I'm hopping in, its been awhile so don't kill me.
OP, from my readings, choosing your substrate depends on your desired method of growing... IMO. If your going monotub, I would choose, rye grains because I've gathered its faster at colonization and easier cleaning and prepping than wbs. Then a substrate of coir/verm/gypsum, because its cheap. If your going sgfc or pmp, the brf/verm, for cheap and easy cakes. You can substitute the brf for rye flour if desired. There is also poo cake teks on here.
Everyone has an opinion, you just need to form your own and explain why you chose what you did. Hope it helps.
P.s. Nah got it right the first time, why nah isn't a tc is beyond me. He spreads understanding!

If you guys really want to get technical about it, spawning is the act of adding mycelium so it can reproduce/divide. The "spawn" is the mycelium itself. Grains are always a substrate because it is the material that the mycelium grows on/ feeds off of. When you spawn grains to bulk, you're not technically spawning the grains. You're spawning the mycelium itself to a bigger substrate. But in terms of the way we refer to everything here for the ease of not getting into unnecessary technicalities, NAH is right.
Saying that grains themselves are spawn because they have the mycelium on them is like saying my testicles are spawn because they carry sperm, or my girlfriends ovaries are spawn because they make eggs, when at the end of the day it's my sperm and her eggs that are considered spawn
Edit: my analogy at the end there probably isn't the best example since bodily fluids don't "consume" the harboring organ, but I stand by the rest of my post

It wouldn't be if people that didn't know wtf they're talking about (you) would stop spreading misinformation, and be humble enough to be corrected. As it sits, here's another thread with contradicting info and it's because you're not willing to be corrected. Now if some noob comes along and searches the forum like so many here tell them to do before asking questions, and that noob comes on this thread, you've added to the confusion.

Coco peat / Verm works good for me so far. I use WBS as spawn because it's easy to get locally and fairly cheap for a bag. Haven't found a place that has rye berries yet.

you're right, you can use a colonized substrate as spawn in more growing medium such as poo. substrate is no more than a growing medium, PF cakes, rye berries, horse poo.... all of it can be a substrate and it can all be used as spawn to expand a grow.
typically with spawn you want something small such as wild bird seed because when broken up it provides more inoculation points than substrates such as popcorn or rye berries, this will typically allow for faster colonization
Like the cat said...
Spawning is an action. It can be grain or manure or a thousand other colonized things that make up the spawn.
That spawn is used to inoculate the final fruiting material...which is the substrate.
Quote:
SUBSTRATE - (1) the food of a fungus; (2) substance acted on by an enzyme; (3) – e.g. polypores mostly occur on wood.
Quote:
Spawn - Culture of mycelium on grain, sawdust, etc., used to inoculate the final substrate, or bulk.
Spawn = mycelium on a food source Spawning = act of moving mycelium to fruiting substrate Substrate = the material from which a fungus is fruiting
