Best way to dry?
    #19028856 - 10/24/13 10:58 PM (11 years, 2 months ago)

Have been browsing other posts, not many definitive answers... what is the best way to get them cracker dry?!

Right now I am fanning and planning to use desiccant, but I am thinking I might as well just buy a dehydrator - save money in the long run. Good idea? What about heating problems?

How's this one?
http://www.target.com/p/nesco-harvest-400-food-dehydrator/-/A-13036835

Edit: or would I be better getting one like this? http://www.walmart.ca/en/ip/salton-food-dehydrator/6000019636562

Thanks!

I fan dry then use a food dehydrator. The heat doesn't hurt anything. But cheap dehydrators motors and heat elements break a lot.

Thanks. The Salton one looks good and has good reviews. So it's okay to heat it at 35C?

If you are going to buy a dehydrator I would recommend excalibur. They are the cadillac of dehydrators. It is a little pricey, $120, but worth every penny. You could literally run those things for years

That much heat is fine. psilocybin doesn't die till extremely high temps

Wonderful. I thought so but just wanted to confirm - lots of different things being tossed around. Going shopping tomorrow then! Thanks all.

My $30 Nesco hasn't failed me... yet. I just wipe off any substrate thats stuck to the shrooms with a dry paper towel and then pop them straight onto a tray in the dehydrator on a slightly warm setting for a few hours. For any particularly meaty shrooms I might split length-wise them so that the whole harvest dries evenly.

Cracker dry shrooms are then broken into smaller pieces and mixed up (normalization - I don't understand why more people don't do this, makes for far more predictable dosing) and dropped into a sealed pint jar with a bunch of desiccant sachets.

Its also a good idea to rotate the desiccant sachets and dry them out in the dehydrator with the shrooms once in a while (put the desiccant sachets 'upwind' of the shroom tray(s), if you get what I mean)

Lol I'm thinking of just paying the $10 more to have temperature control, in case I wanna use the dehydrator for something else.

Notahacker I noticed you updated your guns pic...very nice collection

This is where living in an older building with a central boiler and hot water radiators in every room comes in handy. I just lay down some foil, turn up the dial and make sure the fan is hitting it, and BAM 3-6 hours depending on the thickness.

Just went out and grabbed a dehydrator. Worth it! No hassle or ongoing expense. Just $50 and it can be used for dehydrating other stuff too - croutons, fruits, etc. I recommend the Salton one as it has different temperature settings and there is enough room for most mushrooms to fit in it  very happy with this purchase.
