Hash: I was suggesting a way to possibly rule out T. caligatum, which says flesh doesn't change (at least on Mushroom Expert). Even though I think it is a good name for your mushroom, another clue never hurts.
Ganzig: I had no idea that T. magnivelare stained blue. But I have only seen three specimens in my life, and kept/ate only one. Yours definitely like matsutake to me.
Was the blue there when you cut it?
What did you think of them? My wife and son, who love wild mushrooms both said it was their hands down favorite. I'm really looking forward to finding more, and cooking them up with venison. I think they'd be outstanding together.

The blue color was not there when I cut it. It took awhile to develop.
I like them. I have not had them too many ways. I have really loved them with their complex flavors and I have disliked them. I need more experience.

If you're into venison, try it with Amanita muscaria.

those are Tricholoma caligatum.
T. magnivelare grows with conifers and probably doesn't grow in this area of the U.S.
i had an experience similar to Kuo, with T. caligatum.

I made a miso mushroom soup with T. caligatum, and it wasn't bad
Wasn't particularly good, but it wasn't horribly bitter.

For future reference matsutake means "pine mushroom." I'll take a pic of one in the grocery store if you like.
