what kind of substrate do you prefer?
    #19026016 - 10/24/13 02:23 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

do you prefer manure? BRF? rye grain? and why?
are there particular kinds of substrates and brands to avoid?
What kind of adjustments do you make and if any to improve the cultivation process?

Wbs spawned to coir/verm/gypsum. It's cheap and easy and it works very well. What more could you ask for in a substrate

rye is spawn not substrate and brf is spawn too.

manure can be substrate but I prefer to just use coir+vermiculite+water

Rye would be the substrate if you just had a casing layer on top of it.

And cakes are substrates until spawned.

Anything the mycellium can grow on can technically be called a substrate.

Rye would be the substrate if you just had a casing layer on top of it.-(why its called casing your spawn not casing ur substrate)

And cakes are substrates until spawned.-(thus still making them spawn)

Anything the mycellium can grow on can technically be called a substrate.-(not really cause you spawn to a substrate not substrate to substrate)

Yea, but if you did not spawn it, and just cased grains, what would you call the grains?

Spawn? What was it spawned to?

How about cakes that are fruited as cakes?

its spawn cause you spawned it in the jar they would be called cased spawn.

Cake is a nick name weather its a brf or rye berry ur still just fruiting what yo I spawned in a jar.

ok, spawn and substrate are different. fair enough. Now, could someone provide a definite explaination as to what the actual technical difference is? because I was under the impression that substrate was substrate, whether it was to be used as spawn for other substrate or as fully colonized material. I could be wrong though.
Also, after a recent attempt to make brf cakes out of something labelled as "brown rice bread crumbs" I realized that there are products which are not suited for cultivation. The ingredients were listed as containing only organic long grain brown rice, however nothing would grow from it and now im wondering if there are any other sorts of things to avoid.

If this is true for mold as well, you may have a lawsuit on your hands for false advertisement.

spawn is in jars thats why theyre called jars of spawn.

you then mix them with a properly pasturized substrate i mix 50/50

I prefer coir for substrate cause its cheap, easy to accuire from a hydro store by the bail, and is somewhat contam resistant.

You have to find a subtrate that you prefer to comfortably use

Nah, I wouldnt do that over somthing that grew cobweb mold on a few improperly sterilized samples. It just isnt viable for mycellium growth.

Merriam-Webster dictionary: substrate-The earthy material in which an organism lives, or the surface or medium on which an organism grows or is attached.
...or open any biology book and flip to the glossary

Rumfor, are you insinuating that the glass jar is the substrate?  Its growing on something, therefore there is a substrate - the grain or wbs, or cake (which is brf + verm or whatever you choose) for that matter.

I am new to this hobby, but I have taken plenty of science courses and have a minor in chemistry.  The purpose of this forum is to add to the knowledge of the community, especially nooBs.  You may be able to grow some mushrooms, but if you know nothing about the technical terms, DON'T GO SPREADING MISINFORMATION adamantly.  Notahacker was correct the first time:

you're right, you can use a colonized substrate as spawn in more growing
medium such as poo. substrate is no more than a growing medium, PF cakes,
rye berries, horse poo.... all of it can be a substrate and it can all be
used as spawn to expand a grow.

typically with spawn you want something small such as wild bird seed because
when broken up it provides more inoculation points than substrates such as
popcorn or rye berries, this will typically allow for faster colonization

This site is soooo full of so much contradicting information rye is spawn manure is a subtrate. Manure that's colonized can be used as spawn but its still starts as a substrate.

Rye is only considered "spawn" if you spawn it.

If you case the rye in a tray, it is a substrate with a casing layer, and never was "spawn".

As do grains.
