ID Please - Possible Liberty Cap + Amanita muscaria
    #19025013 - 10/24/13 11:09 AM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Found this on in a cow pasture in Ireland. Thought it might have been a semilanceata but for the lack of a prominent papilla, but maybe it's Psilocybe strictipes?

I found this growing in the grass under a tree (maple or something I think it was). Thought it looked a bit like Amanita muscaria without the spots. There were several others near this one.

I agree with Russula.

I don't think that's not a Liberty Cap. What color was the spore print?

What river said. Looks like R.emetica(does it taste peppery?) but cant be sure because of condition. When looking for Amanitas be sure to get the whole vulva out of the ground and look for the tell tale concentric rings brother. As for the libs I have no idea as I don't know your area and have yet to find a lib in my area so I don't trust myself.

I'm almost certain it's a lib, paricularly now the way it's drying and the cap is changing color. I just thought maybe its Psilocybe strictipes because it doesn't have the nipple, not that it matters much, I was just curious.

Could you clarify your answer? Is it, yes it's active, or yes it's strictipes?

Yes. It is P. semilanceata and might be var. strictipes.

*EDIT* Let me correct that. I had read the term here but there are some significant differences, not just in the papilla and but in the spore dimensions, P. strictipes generally having smaller, narrower spores albeit in an overlapping range. FN lists them as otherwise sharing the same features, but for more yellowish brown ageing in the base of P. strictipes. There also seem to be habitat differences, with P. strictpes preferring mosses. That's about all I can say atm. Sorry for the initial clumsy response.

Is there any other clues would help differentiate, or would I need a microscope? I guess if I found a lot of them in the same area and none had nipples that would be a good indication?
