People always trash on retailers for things like this, or at my work people often talk shit about "OMG I can't believe you already have Christmas stuff up!" and act all indignant about it. The funny thing is that retailers do these things based on customer shopping patterns and stuff. They wouldn't do it if customer demand didn't dictate that it is the most profitable thing to do.

Yeah Wal-Mart has been doing that for at least a year or two, or at least I remember them opening up on the midnight of Thanksgiving for Black Friday sales

Umm where was I trashing on retailers? I assume that's what you meant.

I call bullshit.  People only buy Christmas shit once (per year, if that) and if one store puts it out earlier than the rest, they're stealing all Christmas sales from everyone else over the time that they're the only ones with it on display.  So if Wal-Mart puts its Christmas shit out in October and Target waits until after Thanksgiving, Target has already put themselves behind in sales dramatically and won't catch up since people aren't going to usually buy Christmas shit twice in one year.  It's companies competing for 4th quarter sales, not customer demand.
And this effect has the Christmas merchandise being displayed earlier and earlier all the time.  I remember when seeing Christmas shit around thanksgiving was shocking but now it's not even uncommon to see it around early October alongside Halloween shit.

I guess I just assumed that from your post because you were pretty vague about what you were getting at.

You could argue retails are tailoring these patterns by doing things like this.

Yeah I thought about that while I typed that post. I'm sure it goes both ways, but the bottom line is that they wouldn't do it if people didn't buy it.

Way to lump all customers into a single, amorphous moron completely and defenselessly subject to the simple mind-control techniques of profit seekers.
