Boxer dies after suffering brain injury from a KO (video included)
    #19025119 - 10/24/13 11:34 AM (10 years, 3 months ago)

So what do you guys think of boxing in general?

I always thought of it as a stupid sport. I think its practically irrelevant now since MMA gained popularity. But then again, its still collect millions in profit.

26 years old, died on the ring.

Fucked up.

I've actually heard boxing is more dangerous now that boxing gloves are used, since it can still rattle your brain, and allows you to hit the other person harder without injuring your hand.

Boxing is probably the most pure sport there is, aside form the judging nowadays.

Lots of people die playing hockey and football too.

I mean your job is to hit the skull with your padded fist as hard as you can as many times as you can. Shit happens. I'm sure they are comfortable with the risks.

Personally UFC is better and also even less dangerous because of the submissions and shit. I just like it more. Boxing has no stars besides Pac and Mayweather and they wont fight each other, it's corrupt as fuck, too many weight classes and bullshit no one cares about. But hey I'm sure humans have been hitting each other in the head since the beginning and will continue to forever, it's just what we do.

Damn that sucks.

Guy who won seems pretty obviously worried and not interested at all in trotting around with his hands held in the air at the end.

Not a sport I watch, I stick with MMA for that.
I do remember watching Tyson fight back in the day on HBO when he was taking names. Probably the last fights I ever watched with some exceptions.

Head injuries happen, it sucks.

I mean Pac and Mayweather and besides that who? MMA has tons of big name fighters, Silva Griffin GSP Cotoure, boxing has two. I mean I guess it's because I don't watch but I don't watch because it isn't interesting, there isn't any Tysons or anything like that and the big fight (Mayweather v Pacquiao) wont happen because of money bullshit. I guess a lot of other shit has abandoned boxing for MMA too, like the networks and ESPN, that doesn't help with exposure. But still it happens for a reason.

Actually, I've been noticing that televised boxing has been on the rise. HBO has big fights on every weekend this fall.  My feeling is that it probably has something to do with them having more and more hispanic subscribers.

Just because the "best fighters" (floyd and manny) don't fight one another, doesn't mean that interesting matchups don't happen often.

I challenge you to watch the Ruslan Provodnikov v Mike Alvarado fight that happened two weeks ago and tell me that it wasn't interesting.

This public execution brought to you by Tecate and Office Depot.

I don't watch sports very often enough to get into any of them.

I wish I had some boxing skills to defend myself. Getting boxed in the head leads to the expression of some brain damage protein and its been shown that boxers, rugby players etc suffer dementia and neurodegeneration from taking hits to the head.

I like boxing, I used to box when I was younger it was tons of fun. It takes alot of strategy and skill.

It's not stupid. Boxers take a risk, they know that. Way more motherfuckers die driving down the road to mcdick's to get a dick burger that is going to clog up their body with fat and kill them anyway.

It's just a matter of what risks are worth it/fun.

I agree that the past for15 years or so, TV hasn't been very good to boxing, but for the last three or four, it seems to be getting a lot better.  Again, I think it has something to do with networks responding to the desires of the growing hispanic population in the usa.

Lately certain promoters have been digging up some really talented Russian fighters, and a few of them are certainly gaining "star" status, at least within the boxing community. Gennady Golovkin, Sergy Kovalev, Provodnikov... I'm sure these names mean nothing to you, but most boxing fans sill know the names right away.

As far as non- russian stars go, Sergio Martinez, Nonito Donaire, Bernard Hopkins, the list goes on and on...

Again, it just depends if you're watching or not. If you asked me, I would tell you that baseball has no stars, haha

Head trauma is the new thing in combat/collision sports.

Kinda interesting that its just now coming to light, when it seems like its such an easy problem to get a handle on and characterize.  It seems like there are all sorts of governing/sanctioning bodies.  It should be a straightforward process to track these athletes and see wtf happens to them as they age.

Unfortunately, nobody seems to be holding anyone accountable.

Ha!  only amateurs do.  But really though, I'm not sure we have a good idea of how likely all these different "brain traumas" are to occur from different sports.

Lately we hear all sorts of sob stories about NFL players committing suicide, going nuts, etc.  But people do that all the time, is it really more likely to happen after an NFL career?  Maybe, but how likely?

Is MMA more "dangerous" then boxing?  Maybe, maybe not.  The shame in all of this is that it would be pretty easy to start answering these questions IMO.

There has been a wave of hockey fighters that have killed themselves lately due to chronic depression and trauma causedd by concussion. Some of them said they only felt safe off the ice because as soon that there's a game their job is to fight.

Sports pshychologists are finiding a bunch of new things everyday

Why would that help?  The skull allready spreads the force out across the head, I don't see what a helmet is going to do other than protect skin and muscle.

My view on boxing is that it looks kinda fun at times. However, it definitely has the potential for serious brain damage/death. It seems like it attracts a disproportionate amount of dickheads that enjoy it (mma viewing as well). I get more enjoyment damaging my brain with drugs.

It pads the head and causes the force to be applied at a slowed rate compared to no helmet.

Yeah but when you're in a fight with someone worried you might lose, and then all of a sudden you fuckin get him right in the head and he drops to the ground and dies. Fuck that'd be a rush, and you have no worries about going to jail or any bullshit like that.

How much slower?  I doubt it lowers the power of the punch much given that the glove is allready padded.  The headgear they have is like what, an inch?  That's not going to reduce the acceleration much I wouldn't think.

It also protects against skull fractures, which isn't the issue in boxing.  The relevant comparison is how a motorcycle helmet protects against concussions, and I doubt its very much due to the padding.  A motorcycle helmet is also hard and thus does a good job of distributing the force across the skull.  Boxing headgear is not hard and doesn't do a good job of this.

i feel the need to point out that the last two punches where behind the ear, which is an 'illegal' punch, and he should have had a warning or even had a point taken away.
the fight was not clean, the knockout punches were illegal, he should not be awarded the win.

boxing is a awesome, noble sport with lots of history and tradition.
unfortunately, one of those traditions is corruption.

now, how do we make sports safer?
we don't.
these people make a lot of money doing something very dangerous, they know the risks, and except them.

i would step in the ring with Manny for a couple million, knowing he would most likely kill me.
the benefits are worth the risk.

ever have sex with out a condom?
are the benefits worth the risk?

It also protects against skull fractures, which isn't the issue in boxing.  The relevant comparison is how a motorcycle helmet protects against concussions, and I doubt its very much due to the padding.  A motorcycle helmet is also hard and thus does a good job of distributing the force across the skull.  Boxing headgear is not hard and doesn't do a good job of this.

I know he was joking but...

He didn't say boxing headgear, he said a helmet. You also were talking about a helmet.

There was another famous fight where a boxer from South Korea was killed.

Duk-Koo-Kim died the next day.

Wladimir Klitschko, the reigning heavy weight is currently kicking some serious ass and has been for quite a while.

Is MMA more "dangerous" then boxing?  Maybe, maybe not.  The shame in all of this is that it would be pretty easy to start answering these questions IMO.

We already know MMA is safer. In MMA when you get a concussion the fight is over. In boxing you get multiple opportunities to stand back up, and get another concussion.

Repetitive concussions are VERY bad for your brain. Look at the number of annual deaths. The numbers speak for themselves.

Because I'm seeing numbers like  76 deaths per million for pro boxers, compared to 220 per million for pro athletes in general. Manual labour construction jobs in the USA have a death rate of around 250 per.

Even some popular models of SUV have a death rate of over 250 per million.

In fact, in 1996, the National Safety Council rated boxing as America's safest contact sport

There has only been one or two deaths in the entire history of MMA.

I'm not saying boxers are at a high risk for fatal injury. Just that the mortality rate is dramatically higher than MMA.

2004 UK boxing deaths
For instance in 2004 in the UK there were 18 boxing fatalities.
