Really good strong mushroomy smell. Some of the more rotten ones had a kind of "off" smell, but all the good ones smell amazing. Nutty and earthy, with its own unique spice I can't put my finger on.

Unless there are different varieties then I would say no this is not a matsutake.
The cap is wrong and according to my books they should be found under conifers only.
They do not look right with those fibrils the way they are.
The one I recently found.

Actually there are a few different "matsutake" Tricholoma species. And indeed, some do grow under hardwood. I've heard rumors of Matsutake in Georgia during autumn, but I never knew what to look for. I just stumbled upon these.

That was my closest guess from the reading I had done. I think I might try frying up one of the buttons and see how the flavor is. Taste test and I'll report back.

Before I taste... I am going to make a prediction that it tastes good and has mild to no bitterness at all. I would also like to add that the gills bruise a bluish color, and the stems seem to be lacking in "fibres" below the annular zone. Actually the stems are pretty much bare of any fibers whatsoever except right around the annulus.

Not this species or variety unfortunately. I'll keep my eyes open and take good note though. There is a complex of species in this group, and some may or may not have the blue staining, etc.

Hash, you could cross section one of your specimens and see if the flesh stains.
Cool that you went ahead with the taste test...you took one for the team!
