slimy contam on cake?
    #19018136 - 10/23/13 09:41 AM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Hi everyone, wondering if my buddy's cake is contaminated or healthy.  Upon birthing some brf cakes, he noticed this "Albino" A+ cake had some jelly-like protrusions clinging onto it..It was isolated from the others and dunked in a zip-lok.  Here's the best pics that he could take..any ideas?

just to be clear, I'm referring to the thing dangling from the bottom of the cake in the pic.  there's another similar jelly-like thing near the center-right portion of the cake in pics 1,2,and 4.

I used to get a jelly like substance similar to what you are describing when I did brf cakes.  It was usually after dunking them and then putting them back into the sgfc.  Never caused any noticeable problems for me.

thanks for the vote of confidence, it would be nice for this cake to be able to join the others in the sgfc without contam worries...it's hanging out in an isolated gatorade bottle sgfc now

In case anyone's interested, after reading a bit in here it seems that people claim to experience this "jelly" on colonized substrate from time to time on, yet it's still somewhat debated as to whether the cause is bacterial or if it's simply a by-product of myc in contact with moisture.  I was hoping for more scientific, definitive info..but at this point i think this cake will be reintroduced to the main fruiting chamber, as it doesn't seem to be progressing as well in the gatorade bottle.

If you want to go ahead with this cake, then I would make some improvised terrarium out of a bucket, instead of placing it with the other healthy cakes. Don't increase your chance to get contams !

Cut the uncolonized section or about probably 1/3 of the cake and try getting something out of it. But really, does it worth it ?

edit: In regards to getting a more scientific info. This is as good as it gets, macroscopically. Any further detail would require a microscopical analysis.

Thanks for weighing in on the issue, MAIA.  Since this is a first time grow, erring on the side of caution might be the best route to take.

Building a makeshift quarantine terrarium like you suggested for this cake wouldn't be too difficult, and it would also help to be prepared for future contam scenarios...they seem to be ever-present.  Lost a bunch of colonizing jars to trich, so contams have already caused some headaches
