Need help, colonizing taking awhile.
    #19024585 - 10/24/13 09:22 AM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Hello all, this is my first post.

I am a first time grower, and have 9 jars set up in my closet. I'm using the pf tek with brf and verm. I am also using pint-sized jars as the WalMart and target did not have half pints. The colonizing seems to be taking awhile. I tried to look up average time lengths of colonization for pint jars, but there seems to only be info on half pints.

I innoc'd my first 5 jars on 9/20, and the second set of 4 on 9/28. The first set got visible mycelium on 9/30, didn't write down second sets first visible mycelium.

The first 5 I used 2:1:0.8 verm brf water ratio, and it seemed like it would be too dry, but I am new and decided to just follow the tek. After a week, I decided maybe they were too dry and decided to look up info on it, and found that some people say 2:1:1 ratio, so I started the second set and did just that.

The first sets mycelium looks fluffy and white, but has a very small mycelium area and doesn't seem to be growing at any speed now.

The second sets mycelium, since its wetter, looks like fluffernutter, and all of the last 4 jars mycelium have grown to more than double the first set.

Should it take more than a month to colonize pint jars? I'm getting pretty let down, and staying hopeful that they're still doing their thing and will make it to fruiting. Please help.

also, I will post pictures of the jars when I get home.

Just wait 21 days is pretty average for a PF jar so longer than that is fine too and that's for the correct 1/2 pint jars.

this is why we don't go to wallmart
go to ace/true value etc

You could see them going twice as long as that like 1.5-2 months if they ever do finish and not stall out. Chances are you could do two runs of 1/2 pint jars before your 1pint jar finishes colonizing.

I know half-pints can be pretty hard to find locally, but the reason they are preferred to full pints is that they're more efficient and quicker.

I'd almost guarantee you are looking at at least a full month before you're close to full colonization -- if it happens at all. And that isn't counting time required to consolidate afterwards.

Hopefully they don't stall! Good luck to you!

I'm pretty sure the first set stalled. It doesn't move much
would it be hopeful at all to take out what I have of the first set and put it into a casing?

No it will contam, any uncolonized sterile BRF mix is the last thing you want touching open air. And for that matter a couple spots of mycellium are not going to get you much. You wouldn't want to case it anyway you would want to spawn it to bulk and in that case you would need like a couple shot glasses full of pasteurized substrate only. I would just clean out those jars and use them to store dried mushrooms from the half pints you're going to go and buy today.

You might be able to boost growth by upping the temperature in your closet. How cold is your house? I have to have a heater in my grow room to keep it around 75 degrees F.

But you messed up. Wide mouth half pints are used in the PFtek not just for shape, but for efficiency. Your best bet at this point is to buy some rye berries or use some bird food(chances are you might have something suitable for spawning to bulk. You already have vermiculite so go to Petco or Petsmart and get a brick of coir(<$5). Take a look at some bulk teks.

As for spawning what you have, it's risky. You could grow mold or bacteria, but with proper procedure you can minimize the chance, and with close supervision you can monitor what's growing.

I would just start over with grains spawned to bulk, but if you insist on growing something, a casing might work. I suggest using a small tray inside a properly built SGFC outside of the closet for the fresh air alone. Stagnant air in a closet is more suited for mold. Spawn the jars under a flowhood or in some sort of sterile, still air environment for sure, though. That is the most crucial part.

Casing typical monotubs for P. cubensis isn't really necessary. You should also read more.

My house temp usually stays between lowest 70 and highest 85.

I found a tek for spawning to bulk with horse manure. Would that work for my problem? I live right next to a horse park so it would be convenient

As long as you can get horse manure that's dry, you could do that. But you have to make sure it's dry. Fresh hpoo is loaded with a bunch of nasty stuff. That's just asking for contamination. And you have to properly pasteurize horse poo.
