ID request!! Possible death cap??
    #19024426 - 10/24/13 08:24 AM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Hi all: I found these mushrooms in my yard under what I believe is a pine tree. I was nervous they were the death cap mushrooms so I dug them up and placed them in a garbage bag to put in the trash. I tried to dig up more of the soil too in hope this will lessen the chance of them coming up.  My question is are these the death cap mushrooms? I didnt see a ring around the stem and I don't know if it had the bulb at the end of the stem which I guess some death caps do. If they are the death cap, is there anything I can do to prevent them from growing? Is it possible for them to travel to other parts of the yard to grow?  Any advice is welcomed!

Species #1

Habitat: Found under a pine tree (I think it's a pine tree)

Gills: Appears to be white and touching the stem?

Stem: white

Cap: brownish

Bruising: unknown

I'm pretty sure those are not death caps, however I can't quite make out what they are, can you get any bigger pictures?

It will be easier with bigger pics. Those are tiny. They are probably not Death caps but I can't offer an ID because I can't make out any details from the photos.

Mushrooms play an ecologically important role and generally I think you should find out what you are dealing with before ever panicking. In the UK right now there is a hysteria over Steatoda spiders and people are trampling every garden spider in sight, and what you've done is understandable but similarly backward.

I tried to make it bigger though I'm not sure if it worked. Are you able to click on the actual picture in the post? Maybe it will bring up a bigger picture? Sorry for the it not being large enough! I appreciate any advice!

^^ This.

As far as I know, there's not a widespread problem of dogs dying from mushroom eating.

Thanks that is easier to see, this is where spore color and some more details can help.  Are the stems brittle/hollow and snap easily?  Or more firm?

I hate when people kill harmless spiders, but over Steatoda?

Next time you see one of those people, here is some ammo to address their ignorance.  http://www.burkemuseum.org/spidermyth/
The section about "dangerous" spiders especially...

If I had to guess I would say they are more firm but to be honest I didn't check so I'm only guessing at this point. They did not seem to fall apart when I dug them up but I was being pretty careful too.

They could be a Psathyrella species which would be harmless especially if they are fragile/brittle, but I'm not certain about that.  Its good to be cautious about what your dogs eat, most mushrooms won't be an issue though.  Still, its never a bad idea to learn what a death cap looks like, I would also learn about Inocybe species, and not let your dogs play with any mature puffballs or similar.

Thank you. I basically am over cautious and do not let my dog near any mushrooms that I see on our walks or in the yard. Thanks again for the info.

Bear in mind that the whole thing about all mushrooms in the wild being nasty and dangerous is borne from a myth that mothers invented in the UK to scare their kids. Just like bread crust making hair go curly.

In European countries with a rich history of mushroom picking in the forest, there is no such overreactions.
