New hunter here, go easy please! :) ID help?

Please do accept my apologies as I may go outside the normal format for an ID request, I'll grow better at providing the right information but I'm hoping my clear images will help offset my neewbie mistakes!
Habitat: Where does it grow? Given the amount of varying opinions I've found in my 5 days of research, I'd like to not disclose the location just yet to see what sort of ID's may come up...
Gills: Gills are what I think are attached, still learning terms... they are a purplish brown
Stem: I know typical measurements are given in MM, but these range from 2" to about 6" at their tallest..
Cap: Up to about 3" diameter I'd say... they are a golden, rounded top, appear to go flat on the under side.
Spore print color: Very important! Very purplish brown
Bruising: Have not noted any brusing over the course of a week

Stropharia ambigua, or something very much like it.
--------------------
Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it. If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

This doesn't actually mean the location, but the type of substrate a mushroom is growing from, grass, dung, woodchips etc. It is extremely important, actually the deciding factor very often! I can see how you'd think these could be Psilocybe cubensis or something, but they were not growing from horse manure, were they? What you have is a Stropharia species. Awesome ID request otherwise!

Thanks Tangich... gotcha @ the location! That was kind of the crux... I've been reading all sorts of varying comments on if cubes could possibly grow in the pacific northwest.. which is why I was looking to keep a bit covert on the "location" as it were. But no, no dung. There are absolute forests of these popping up in what amounts to conifer forest beds. And now that the cat is out of the bag... I have too much acreage to cover myself herein SW washington state.. so I'll be looking for in the know shroomers to perhaps come spend a day or two hunting with me if anyone reading this is interested! Split the goods 50/50. I'm quite certain we've got many edibles & certainly some magics about, just need to determine which from which. Thanks for your input & kind words.

You have many species of psychoactive mushrooms in the PNW, mostly growing in urban woodchips, but you definitely won't find P. cubensis. Do some reading, there is a very good guide about finding mushrooms on the main site, know where and for what to look, and good luck!

I also agree with Stropharia as an ID, due to the hairs on the stipe. I think the coloration of the stalk completely rules out the likelihood of it being psilocybe squamosa, though, which it does resemble. I'm referencing my field guide, so... sue me.

that species is in Leratiomyces, not Psilocybe.

I never said it was. P. squamosa is in stropharia, though, so it's not a stretch for one to misidentify it.

You did, when you called the taxon Psilocybe squamosa. That is no it's name anymore. It is called Leratiomyces squamosus now. It is also not in Stropharia. You are confusing the family Strophariaceae with the genus Stropharia.

I said that the chances of it being p. squamosa were ruled out. They do share similar cap and gill structure and color. They both have scales on the stipe, but the color of p. squamosa's stipe is darker.

You are entirely missing the point; That's not what we're discussing. We are discussing the validity of that name in the first place.
There is no such thing as P. squamosa anymore.

Ahh, I see what you mean. I'm referencing an Audobon field guide which uses its dated name. Is it active? :/

Nah. It always struck me that it 'looks like' it should be though.

Here here. A friend who was just a little bit more in the know than I was fairly certain it was a cube, even though I had read elsewhere they didn't grow wild in the NW. So for over a week I thought i had a 70 acre forest of cubes!! If you could imagine my disappointment now in being able to rule that out!
I appreciate all the replies gang, I hope to get more active here as time passes but as an absolute neewb I'll likely just be lurking in the shadows as I have very little to offer up. But bet I'll be asking for more help identifying. Perhaps get some good images for others to share as they see fit as well.
Cheers

And if ya'll don't mind... since it's been a great & quick experience so far... would you mind putting in your knowledge on the next set? Again, I'm hoping my decent pics will help offset my lack of description somewhat. Thanks in advance!
Location: Heavy old growth mixed conifer & alder forest
Cap: perhaps 1.5" at it's largest found so far Stem: 3-4" at it's largest, a bit of a flare at it's base. (little white piece of paper in pics is just a post it for ref) I'm not sure if it's because I'm "wanting" to see it, but it appears to have blueish striations to it. Gills: Purple-esque brown, look as though they alternate between full length attached & shorter ones (again, neewb here still learning terms) Spore print: lost track of the paper I had it on, will do a new sample soon. Bruising: nothing obvious noted as of yet

A willingness to learn, the very act of hunting and nice photographs are all positive things you have to offer. Don't ever be concerned about asking questions or posting ID requests, most of us need help ID'ing a LOT of finds, even if we have been hunting and taking pictures for years.
Also, I think we all like members from the PNW/NW as you live in one of the most interesting and prolific habitats on the planet!
