Pickers and kickers which are you?
    #19022845 - 10/23/13 11:40 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

If your a picker do you wish you were a kicker? Im definitely a picker and think It might be best I become a kicker. Like they say there are bold mushroom hunters and old mushroom hunters, there are no old bold mushroom hunters. Ive eaten a lot of edibles Ive found and aside from recent side pains that could be due to my medication, i have been fine. I read it can be too late if you're poisoned by Amatoxins and you don't get to a hospital within 24hrs of onset you're pretty much fucked unless you can find a donor with a kidney to spare! I also read that theres not much of the poison in the bloodstream of the patients with poisonings, I'm a hypochondriac and I worry too much about nonsense. I haven't been vomiting and I feel normal but my kidney area is experiencing a slight pain off and on, like I said this could be just from my depression meds for they are foreign chemicals. But just to ease my mind have any of you ever worried you may have took it too far eating wild mushrooms? Also if I have poisoned myself wouldn't I be sick and have diarrhea and be vomiting a lot and have abdominal cramps? I feel great like I was saying earlier except for possible liver or kidney pains. My appetite is good. My energy high as usual. No bad cramps. Any advice is appreciated. Stories welcome!

You are not poisoned, and amatoxins affect the liver, not kidneys. Just calm the fuck down and stop worrying! Amatoxins don't ninja their way onto other mushrooms to deliberately and maliciously poison people.
What's the difference between pickers and kickers btw? I pick only chantarelles and trumpets these days.

Well, I am not a particular expert on the subject of Amatoxins, so I just looked up a few things to make sure...

From what I've read, Amatoxins affect the liver first, which then causes renal toxicity.

The symptoms of poisoning don't start to present themselves at all for about 24 hours, at which point diarrhea, cramps, and general gastrointestinal distress develop but then pass. Some people get a false sense of security from the cessation of apparent symptoms but within 3-5 days the severe hepatoxicity sets in and start the organ failure process, which is usually not 100% reversible. If it's fatal (10% of cases are), death usually takes place a week from ingestion.

So, yeah, there should definitely be some uncomfortable symptoms if you ingested any. But even at that point, if you get to the hospital, it's apparently still very possible to prevent organ failure. From your post it seems like you ate these a while ago, so I think you're probably fine.

Also, it's just good to know (if you don't already), that taking milk thistle and/or it's extract is somehow incredibly hepa-protective and can help combat Amatoxin poisoning while waiting for/in addition to medical attention.

If you are concerned, I would not counsel you not to seek medical intervention, but unless there's something you aren't telling us, I think you're just experiencing a perfectly normal attack of paranoia.

Pickers pick and eat mushrooms, and kickers kick them away and dont eat. They say Europeans eat wild mushrooms more then Americans. There are more poisonings from foreigners then people that live here. The only questionable things Ive ate recently are the following.
1. Shaggy mane pins
2. Calvatea gigantea and myathiformis
3. Lycoperdon perlatum
4. Goose liver aka braunswager that was left uncovered in the fridge a few days
5. Canned trout
TY all for the info! I am worrying too much Im sure of it now.
I was so worried two days ago for a friend I stayed up all night scared for them and stressed so bad my stomach began hurting and my chest near my heart tightened up. I had an anxiety or panic attack. The next day i had diarrhea. It went away.
I was in the hospital for two days this time last year with an infected tonsil. It damn near killed me! this has me paranoid now, everytime Ive been to the hosp. They tell me I waited to long to go there. I try to fix the prob. Myself. I sewed my own wounds, made my own remedies..and sometimes dont care and just eat whatever. Then Later on I think shit why did I eat that? So im paranoid for good reason but not. What can I say. I need to man up and just go to my doctor and have blood work done and a checkup. I just am paranoid about everything in general, dont mind me please.:crazy2:

drink more water. your kidneys sound like they're thirsty. also, you should probably get checked for kidney stones... much better to figure out if you have them before they start trying to make their way down your ureter... take it from someone who knows the agony possible. I don't know how old you are but I got my first stone when I was 18, so although rare in young people, they're not unheard of.

...and don't even think of kicking over mushies or I'll come through your monitor and bitch-slap you.

Salmonella and E. coli are rough on the liver, kidneys and heart. I don't think minor dysfunction would be unusual following a bought with food born illness. Of course, I'm not a physician, but I play one on the webs.

Ive also had food poisoning about a month ago. Ate burger king and got so sick I had all the symptoms and should have got checked out then. I was weak, throwing up and had the shits at same time. Sweating, short of breath and after the worst of it was over I itched really really bad! I couldnt stop scratching! Then i fell asleep and was fine the next day, but the night before when i was sick it was the worse pain I ever felt and Ive been hit with a chainsaw in my wrist twice so I know pain!! I was very weak and couldnt hardly move. I thought i was dying. I appreciate the help buddy!

kidney stones will make you wish you were dead all on their own, and psych meds, dehydration, and caffine can make it easier for them to develop, I've read.
