Psilocybe cyanescens question
    #1902260 - 09/10/03 03:15 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

I have collected about half a safeway bag full of woodchips and other organic material with small to medium amounts of cyan mycelium on it. Right now i have it sitting in the plastic bag outside temp is about 17 deg. celsius. I don't have any hardwood wood chips yet. I have briefly look through some outdoor teks on cyans and azuers and learned that i should have started the mycelial growth in spring, correct? What i really need to know is, what is the best thing i can do with what i have right now, should i leave it in the bag outside untill i can get some alderwood chips or take them out of the bag and put them in a small bed of what i have? Thanks in advance.

make do with what you have. You can use cardboard to expand your spawn

cardboard is a good idea. Sterilize some cardboard by steaming it then place a piece of mycelia in the ribs in between the two sheets of paper. It should grow and consume the whole interior of the cardboard. You could even start your own indoors patch of shrooms off sterilized cardboard. But if you do it outside make sure you put the mycelia under a bush so it can feed off nutrients and stay humidified. The spring is probably the best time to do that.

Ok, i will try the cardboard, thanks for the advice. I am going to put the patch under a birch tree. Will the tree affect the mycelium or the mushrooms? Should i put it under a diffrent tree instead?

Birch tree will be okay. Wood loving mushrooms grow on birches. However I would put it under a bush. The closer the leaves are to the shrooms the more humid it will be. Anything in the Rhododendrom family, ex. Camelia, Azaela.

I would think that any evergreen shrub would work. Although I am not sure what effect those black berries, when digested, would have on mycelia. A rose bush will also work well.

Ignore the cardboard. What you have there is a bag of pre-colonised clones that you know will fruit. You dont need to go sterile, because by adding fresh woodchips *(hickory, alder, beech) to the mix and gradually building up, you can make a huge patch.
Place in well-shaded spot in the garden, cover with pinebark and water - it should never dry out.
will fruit in fall unless your weather is humid and not cold.

Elm will work. Any kind should be good.
Just about any hardwood will work along with conifers. P cyan. fruits naturally on Fir trees.

Pan. cyan. fruits on cow dung. It should be grown much like a cub. with the addition of dung.

Any reason one could not make some Karo jars with pan cyan?

I don't know much about Karo culture I have yet to try it. If Cub. spores germinate then I would think that those should also.
