Two similar Species
    #19022308 - 10/23/13 10:08 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Thought this one looked like an easy ID to someone who knows it and only took a few pics and observations at the time of fruiting. Actually they have been fruiting for a month at least now and there are probably some stragglers.
Anyways they grow in similar substrates and they look the same minus the color.
I ate a couple white ones, they tasted good (standard mushroom) and I felt fine.
White ones proliferated like crazy in the garden bed.
Let me know if u happen to know this sucker it would be interesting.

Habitat:
White-fine top soil and mulch of planter bed
Yeller- potting soil

And incidentally, the wild form of Enoki look absolutely nothing like that description: http://www.mushroomexpert.com/flammulina_velutipes.html

It's the cultivation conditions and probably a great deal of breeding selection that make them look like the cultivated ones.

Didn't look like anything too poisonous...ate a very small piece, I guess the white one's are possibly edible, at least not poisonous for sure like the yellows

Maybe the alkaloids responsible for the color of L. birnbaumii are themselves the toxic constituents.

I wouldn't have gone experimenting with eating either of them though.
