Reishi lc contam?

This is my first post and my first attempt at making an lc. The Shroomery is a great resource to have. Thanks to everyone for making it what it is.
Is it normal for these blackish specks to be on the outer edge of the mycelium like this?

LC is 4% light karo 96% water. the other jar doesn't look like this one but I had them in different conditions. The other had less growth with no black specks. Inoculated both with reishi lc syringe on 10/12/13.
Also how important is GE on LC like this. I made a SHIP with silicone on the jar lid and used a syringe with poly-fil (didn't have cotton) and alcohol to equalize pressure then inoculated. Could this cause significant problems with growth?
Thanks, Neller

That picture doesn't help much, but black specks are usually a bad thing. Reishi mycelium does not have black specs. Probably contamination.

I'm completely lost as to what you mean by this. Equalize pressure? What exactly did you do?

if a jar of liquid is pressure cooked without any holes for GE it will create a vacuum as it cools. a blank syringe stuffed with polyfil is stuck into the injection port so that the pressure can equalize and hopefully not suck in contams.
In the future use polyfil as a filter on your jars, or get filter disks GE is important for mycelial growth.
I agree with forrester, reishi shouldnt have black spots, looks like a contam.

Ah, now I get it!
wouldn't it just be easier to put a GE hole w/filter?

I didn't put a filter patch on it because I am clumsy and was afraid I would jostle the jars and get some lc on the patch causing a contam. Plus my lack of experience with the technique of lc.
So mycelia produces co2. Is this similar to yeast. I just find it hard to comprehend that something submerged in a liquid can benefit from gas exchange above the liquid. Unless it creates co2 and carbonates the lc without ge. Is this line of thinking way off target?
Thank you for your replies. Not the worst news about the contam. I have another for the time being and a few grain jars.

im guessing that the mycelium breathes above the surface of the water, like coming up for air. maybe that's partly why magnetic stir sticks are effective, agitation allowing more oxygen in contact with mycelium.
a mystery to me
