Fruiting in an office park in Hayward, CA
    #19021965 - 10/23/13 09:07 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

I was curious to know if this mushroom is edible  Smells great and there were plenty of very similar looking younger specimens fruiting around that area

Habitat:

Fruiting in a well-irrigated, manicured grass lawn near some large deciduous trees (was not sure about tree species)

Gills:
Gills are free from stem.  They seem very beefy and thick, and run straight. Spore print yielded warm grey-brown spores.

Stem:
3 1/2" long, 5/8" in diameter.  Solid and thick with a little give when pinched.  Color runs from white near the cap into blondish brown near the base.  Annulus is

Cap:
5 1/4" in diameter
Color is sandy brown to white.  Smooth at edges.  Scaly and wrinkled in the middle.  Top layer of skin seems to peel.  Cap is depressed in the middle and slopes down at the edges

Spore print color:
Warm light brown

Bruising:
Unknown

Other information:
Smells like a mushroom! Light earthy scent. . . faintly sweet.  Not gross at all.

U said the gills wer thick. Was the mushrooms brittle?

If it was Psyathrella the print would be black so i withdraw that first guess.

The cap and stem can flex and bend.  I guess they wouldn't qualify as such.  Cap and stem are white upon breaking open.

You'd be surprised at how much those types of details can help with identifying mushrooms.

O ok. Like Jet said Agaricus sp. my guess would be arvensis, look for yellow staining. If it stains yellow they are Prolly A. Arvensis. If it doesnt stain yellow I dunno MAYBE. A. Campestris but those usually have white caps and pink gills:shrug:

I found a shit ton of these couple weeks ago. Wiki said arvensis are great edibles hut can cause gastric upsets just like Armillaria do.

Stem looks way too thin for arvensis. Some kind of agaricus would be my 2cents, then again, you guys established that...

Shoot. I should say that the gills have darkened since I picked them (about 6 hours ago) and they were just stored in open air in the car.  The younger neighbors of the specimen in the photos had whiter caps and pink gills.

Give me a minute to get them on the cyberweb.  Total greenhorn here.
