Growing next to my p cyanescens
    #19021748 - 10/23/13 08:33 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

What are these? Spores seem about the same as the psilocybe cyanescens that are growing all around them. Pretty sure it's bruised blue. In Washington... Anybody have an ID?

Galerina contain compounds which bruise dark, much like potent Psilcobian mushrooms, except Galerina marginata is deadly toxic, as it contains amatoxins.

Yeah it would be good to spore print everything.  Galerina have a rusty spore print, and "nescens" have a purplish print.

What I'm saying is that the spores that dropped on the other mushrooms caps seemed purplish. That's my I'm stumper. Also they are much bigger then galerinas. From what I've researched.

get a spore print from it by cuttin the stem under the cap, and place the cap down on white paper for a few hours, with the gills faced down onto the paper.

If the spore print comes up rusty coloured then it's unmistakably Galerina marginata. Anyways there sure have been a lot of cases lately where people find them right next to each other.

I would like to see clearer pictures. It think this is a great
example of how close in appearance the two species can be.

THAT mushroom looks nothing like galerina autumnalis to me. FOR ONE there is absolutely no veil remaining or any indication there was one, PICture is blurry,,,,but The color is a bit off of Galerina................................and that also looks like the stem is WHITE and BRUISING BLUE....NEED BETTER PIC....BUT IF THE SPORE PRINT IS PURPLE TO PURPLE BROWN OR A BROWN WITH A HINT OF PURPLE then its cyanescens, p. alennii(fricosa) or even azurescens.......TO ME it looks just like an azurescens......

eeekkkkk...

I have found a galla with blue bruising before.. somewhere I have a picture that I took of it... It had actually made it home in a bag of picks from a night pick.... its the only one that has ever made it into my bag, Im glad I re-inspect several times during the processing... it felt like a cyan, bruised like a cyan, but it was definitely not a cyan... sneakiest galla I have ever come across... it led me to think it had been breeding with the patch that surrounded it... and it wasnt stained blue by the others, it actually bruised blue.... scary stuff!

I think they look more like azures than gallas.....
which makes me feel much better, cause that looked like a sneaky ass galla if it were one.
- but the stem and gills just didn't look completely right for ither cyans nor gallas.... didnt even consider azures.. but with your new pics I think you are on the right track!

My bets are on Azures!

You are lucky.
I am jealous.

Hey is this the same patch as yours?

I hardly ever came across any large ones, but you might be amazed by how large they can get.

I remember seeing photos from one of the old-timers from around the turn of the milenium which were enormous. In one of the pictures was a disposable coffee cup lid and the mature ones had caps the size of the lid, and looked to be some 8" tall.

Azurescens does not seem unlikely to me. If you really wanted to find out, it would be worth keeping a specimen or two for study.

You say they don't bruise much, or they bruise a lot and not all of it appears blue? Those I observed occasionally bruised lightly, but mostly bruised if you even looked at them wrong, and often so dark as to appear indigo-black.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

Those are P. azurescens or something similar for sure. I would have chimed in days ago but have been busy. They don't seem any bigger than most P. azurescens I find, I would say around 8" tall is definitely within the average range, even the low end of average and a 3" or even 4"+ cap diameter on very mature specimens is not uncommon, in coastal dune grass at least.

So these are safe to eat? I wonder how potent they are. With the size. I'm sure 1 specimen fresh would make something go down hahaha.
