transfering large amounts of money
    #19021529 - 10/23/13 07:57 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

so a friend of mine who lives like 3 hours away owes me a large sum of money. 5000+. it would be beneficial to both of us if he didn't spend the gas money to drive here and i have no way to get to him. what are my options as far as getting money here, short of giving him my bank account number and having him put it in the account for me.

Anything over $10k will be flagged by a financial institution. Money orders could work, as they're anonymous at the time of purchase. Would still have to be sent in the mail BUT both parties could keep tabs on it (see if it was cashed and by who, plus I believe there's some type of insurance on it if they are stolen, etc.).

im telling you just give paypal your routing and then your friend makes his own account and does the same and just have him wire to yours

it's no big deal maybe get 2500 or less at a time since i think 3000 is the cut off in some places

Have him drive over there and get the money and use it to pay for your gas. Paypal takes a small percentage of your money.
I found this on the Paypal site:

"Goods and services – Purchase payments:

There’s no fee to use PayPal to purchase goods or services. However, if you receive money for goods or services (such as from selling an item on eBay), the fee for each transaction is 2.9% plus $0.30 USD of the amount you receive."

So basically, they will take $150 from you. Its cheaper for you or him to drive there. Or you can be a lazy ass and potentially have the government investigating your large transfer of money. Which would be $4849.70 instead of $5000 minus gas money. And if he really is your friend and not just a "business" partner, he would really do that for you.
Good luck.

If it's under 10k, have him write you a check.

You do know that transferring money is the reason checks were invented, right?

If your bank is a national chain and there is a branch near him, just have him deposit the money into your account.  They don't even ask for ID for deposits.

EDIT: Sorry, just re-read that you didn't want to it this way.  I dunno why though. It would seem to be the easiest way.

It happens all the time, and it's legal to send up to $5,000 cash through USPS. You can also get insurance in case your package gets lost. It's really the most viable anonymous way except driving, which OP apparently isn't willing to do.

Either have him wire it directly into your bank account (no good reason not to)...it's not like he will have access to your account now that he has the bank account number.

Or have him fedex a check or money order.  This is a very easy problem to solve.

If you really need it cheap, then get $100 bills, but em in a box and ship em.

Other than that, you'll need some type of transfer service.  That will probably be about 3%.  That will be about $180 to transfer 6k.  If you have that much money, a few hundred won't set you back that much.

Or have your friend open a free checking account (like a normal, mature adult), then write a check, then close the account.

You're over thinking this.  Really.

Are you a moron?  Sending a box of hundred dollar bills is absolutely retarded.  Number one, how big do you think $5,000 is in $100 bills?  It's about half an inch thick and obviously the length of a dollar.

If you send actual cash in the mail you are a fucking moron and just begging to have it stolen.

Either have the money wired to your bank account or have a check/money order sent.  It's extremely simple.  Oh yeah, did a mention DO NOT SEND CASH IN THE MAIL.

You could use google wallet, the P2P is still in beta so you need to now someone like me if you want to get in on it
So I send you .01 just to have google wallet P2P

also you would need id verification (ssn) to receive and go through to bank verification like paypal
(aka google sends you an amount under a dollar and you enter that amount on wallet, so they know its your account)

pm me if interested: errolscool

Up to $5,000 is perfectly kosher. Otherwise, everytime your grandma sent you $20 for your birthday it'd be a felony.

For calling someone a moron, I would have thought you possessed the intellectual capacity to have at least read the thread.  Then you would have known that all the options you mentioned have been proposed

Guess what, you can send an item half an inch thick and the size of dollar bill in the mail.  Yes, the mail can send *gasp* packages.

Further, the mail system is very safe and secure.  Do you know how many people on this site send/receive all sorts of goodies in the mail?  People order shit from China all the time.  Then there's insurance, signature confirmation etc. etc.

So please, read the security and safety thread, where there are threads discussing the safety and efficiency of mailing things.  Try to have at least the smallest shred of information before making yourself look like an idiot.

I know far better than you about shipping stuff in the mail.  Guess what happens if by chance the $5,000 gets stolen, lost, etc. in the mail?  I'm sure the post office would gladly refund it, right?  Matter fact, I had a couple hundred grand sent to me and it didn't come.  Better get on the horn with the USPS to have it refunded.

If you honestly think sending $5,000, in hundred dollar bills in the mail is a good idea, then you could possibly have down sydrome.

So you did it wrong, and tried to do it too big. If you're dealing with 6 figures, you have someone drive it. Even if they gotta go cross-country and spend $500 on gas, it's well worth it.

If you honestly think sending that much cash in a package is a good idea, you must have Down's Syndrome.

For $5K, fuck yeah, send it in the mail. Package it well and get insurance so that if it does get lost or stolen then yes, you go ask for your money back, and you get it. Delayed for sure, but it's not just a loss.

For that matter, send postal money orders. 5 of them for $1,000 each.

Nope. I'm just not paranoid to the extreme, and have done my research on how the postal system actually works.

What about my post is retarded? You send cash, you got insurance. It's not illegal to put up to $5,000 in a package.

You send money orders, you have stubs and can write them to a person, making them useless to anyone else. You can get refunds on money orders in worst-case scenarios, too.

Why you think it's not worth it to drive a few hours to protect hundreds of thousands of dollars is beyond me.

The reality is that mailing services screw up an exceptionally small amount of time.  I've probably personally sent hundreds of moderately high priced items (500-1k) on ebay.  Not a single problem.  Ever.

I also worked in a shipping area of an office for two years and sent thousands of packages out; using all types of services.  Get it tracked, require a signature.  Nothing was ever just magically lost.

So really, keep asking people how dumb they are then proving your utter stupidity.  This is funny.

Are you fucking retarded?

The SENDER, who has the receipt for the package, gets the refund. And yes, they will just hand over $5K after some paperwork. That's exactly what insurance means. They insure that one way or another, you don't lose your shit.

You claim a $5,000 package, pay the maximum amount that they charge for insurance and if something happens, you get a check as long as you have your receipt.

LOL at these fucking morons not being able to tell I was being sarcastic about having hundreds of thousands of dollars sent to me in the mail.

So you admit that you have no experience with this. And obviously know nothing about how it works.

I'm calling troll at this point, but either way you simply have no idea of what you're talking about.

I challenge ALL of you cock sucking morons that think the USPS will refund you $5,000 if the package is lost or stolen (obviously the sender would get the refund you stupid fuck....thanks for stating the obvious).  Show me one shred of evidence that they will do this.  I'll wait you faggots.  And if you are just going to keep regurgitating "
HERP DERP GIT INSORANZE" I fucking own you and you 100% admit it.  Now go on you pussies.

Have your mommy take you down to the post office. You can meet the mailman and learn about how adults ship valuable items.

Telling you to go find out how it works isn't a claim. Come back when you are able to hold an itelligent conversation like an adult.
