A nice big Piptoporus betulinus.

And a dried out Laetiporus sulphureus.

Actually, you can't do much with em. As far as I know they aren't edible, and they most certainly aren't active.

The Piptoporus betulinus is a common Birch Conk. It had many uses and was indispensable to early pioneers. Homesteaders and as far back as the Bronze Age man used this as a fire starter, anesthetic and antibiotic for dressing wounds. They are not good to eat but lots of things can be done with it. And of course people use it for art as well. Everyone I'm sure has seen them painted.

Wow newAK, thanks for the info, I didn't know all that. It sure sounds pretty interesting. Maybe I'll give the fire-starting thing a try, sounds interesting to me. To my knowledge other species (from the ganoderma genus) were used to that end, but why wouldn't the Birch Conk work eh?

Thanks!
