Why did this happen to my casing layer...
    #18996314 - 10/18/13 04:14 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Could someone tell me why this happened to my casing layer. It is 50% peat 50% coarse verm 3tblsp hydrated lime 9tblsp gypsum.... Substrate is 4 quarts HPOO 4 quarts coarse verm 4 quarts coir and 2 tsp lime. Spawned with 5.5 quarts popcorn colonized with Penis Envy and grown out in a filter patch myco bag. My last 2 grows have been complete failures... maybe an ounce from 5 58 quart bulk tubs....

Popcorn is one of the worst spawn. It is too big and the endospores could survive the pc. Also it does not provide many inoculation points. Try to use rye grain or wbs instead. Din't worry about doing a casing layer until you can fruit your monos properly. Just follow good sterile procedures, use clean spawn, pasteurise properly and you won't have failures again.

I have had plenty of success with popcorn for the last 2 years. Two of the tubs that failed were actually WBS... There is something going on with my casing layers and I can't figure out what. I suppose I could go without a casing layer next time though...

Two of them did something similar. The others started pinning and then turned blue like they were bruised and then it turned into a blue/green color and got fuzzy and covered the mushrooms that were growing. it was a big circle pattern, maybe trich? IDK really...

Yep. I gave it a 10 day spawn run, it was nice and white... It started out looking good, then 2 days later it got all crusty...

Would scratching be helpful in this situation? I have been told no, but it doesn't seem to be doing much so I can't see it getting any worse...

You can do things the exact same way a hundred times with success, then all the sudden it don't work.

Looks seriously contaminated to me.

Could be your pasteurization technique. Could also be contamed spawn.

I've never fooled with casing layers personally. But they seam to help prevent PE blobs.

Nor have I ventured in to lime. From what I've read, improper use of lime creates a contam risk.

Check out this link. He's using jiffy mix. Read through the whole thread.

Jiffy-Mix seed starter (i prefer non organic for pH reasons) is an excellent casing material. Its prebuffered peat, verm.  Love it.

From what i can tell, yea, try forgoing the casing layer.  Also, I'm not an expert on the substrate or nutrients you're using but one thing does stand out.  For your substrate, you use 2 tsp of lime.  And your substrate is maybe 4-5x the volume of your casing layer, which you use 3tbs lime, which is a lot more than your sub.  Also 9tbs of gypsum seems like a lot as well.  Now i could be wrong but i'm guessing that's where your problem is.  Try a straight verm casing layer? or i've had success with casing a mix of 50/50 coir/verm, which apparently isn't the best anymore, but it works for me:)
