What do you use half gallon jars for if you do 1

I tried once because I needed jars and local store only had them. Since using once, and not being so big on colonization times I have only since used them for making tea out in the sun.
However I had an odd amount of grains from my last batch and am debating on filling one of them in regards to a couple or few quart jars
Now I know the obvious answer being we use them for spawn. But I'm just curious of some of your applications? How much you add to a jar from a master? And if you find them any more or less efficient and whatnot?

I had a similar situation. I ran out of quart jars and had about 3 quarts left of prepped popcorn. I filled a half gallon and knocked it up using about 2x as much spawn as normal. Colonized great. The onnly problem is I cannot fit that many in the PC

I think he means it's already been answered

RogerRabbit said: Half gallon jars often go anaerobic in the centers. It's also harder for the CO2 to escape the larger jars. Personally, I don't use anything larger than quarts, even though I have five or six cases of half gallon jars in storage. Try leaving the jars laying on their sides. Next grow, I'd suggest quarts for grains.
In addition, the larger the container, the drier you make the grains. You'll use about 20% less water(per measure of grain) with half gallons than you'd use with quarts. RR

RogerRabbit said: I see you found the post about larger jars going anaerobic in the centers. If you do choose to use them, place them at a 45 degree angle, which helps the gasses escape, and shake more often. My experience is that they're no faster than quart jars, and in fact slower. I have five cases of half gallon jars sitting in the garage. I'll probably use them for nails, screws, etc. some day. RR

RogerRabbit said: You could probably use closer to 750ml. Just make sure to leave room for the 1/2 pint master and shaking room. I'd suggest hydrating the rye berries separate from the jar, and then load the half gallon jars just under 2/3 full. RR

Tipping the jars at a 45 degree angle, sounds silly but I won't question RR.
The mycelium produces heat, which causes circulation, and by placing the jars at a 45 degree angle, it's easier for the heat produced to puke the gasses out. I'd still recommend quart sized jars. They perform better. Shake 1/2 gallon jars twice during colonization rather than the recommended once for quart jars. RR

Well RR is just another human like us all, and sorry to say but he is wrong on this one. When I have used quart jars I did not have any problem with them getting anaerobic. They colonized just as fast as my quarts without any shaking.
No different than using large size grow bags. I have friend who uses 6 quart grow bags with no problems. and he does no shaking
Half gallon jars work!

Maybe you had better gas exchange Everyone's going to have different results there's plenty of info there though if you don't believe it or like it then try it for yourself anyway.

I feel I do. It is about a 1/4 inch hole in the lid stuffed tightly with polyfil

I also like the way polyfill works for me. I might even try a 1/2 gal just to see for myself.
I might even dare to try a 4L glass wine jug with the whole neck stuffed tight with polyfil. Drill a hole in the side with a glass bit and make a SHIP. Seems fragile but I like danger.

I've never used 1/2 gals for spawn because I've read they are a bad idea. Slow colonizing, longer sterilization times, water pooling at the bottom, and inefficient use of PC space as compared to quarts and bags. Just what I've read. There are tons of posts.
I bought some for pasteurizing substrate, but that is inefficient as well. Quarts work better IMO.
I now use them for storage. Get my fruits cracker dry and fill up a jar. Then throw in a couple of my homemade silica desiccant packs. I vaccum seal the jar with a wide-mouth jar lid sealer hooked up to my Foodsaver hose attachment.
