Has a command economy EVER worked
    #19020345 - 10/23/13 04:41 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

It seems in history there has been two major ways of dealing with economics. Command and Free Market. I'm learning more about command economies where the government controls what the factory produces, where you work and what you can buy. Sounds terrible, the only country I can think of that's kind of pulling it off is Cuba but that's still not the nicest of places to my understanding

Command economies and systems like Socialism and Communism sound great in theory, but they all have two critical flaws:

1) To work properly, the people in charge (the regime) must be absolutely infallible and incorruptible and have the best interest of the general populace in mind at all times.

2)  Those systems try to suppress human nature (greed and the urge to be better than and to compete with your neighbor), as opposed to Capitalism and the free market which leverages those urges to drive the economy.  Capitalism is not perfect, nor is our government, but any system which requires the suppression of human nature to work will inevitably fail.

Edit:  On a large scale, anyway.  Almost any system can be made to work with 500 people or fewer.  As long as everyone in the community knows and interacts with each other on a regular basis, the sense of community and 'family' can naturally keep greed under control, but as soon as there are enough people in the community to start having true strangers (people you might only ever see once in your life), it becomes far easier for people to start being bastards and take advantage of each other.

Command economies right now:

- OPEC countries for the oil
- China owned every industry in 1980 and still owns large percentages of lots of them today
- India has many state owned corporation

They all seem to be making a LOT of cash nowadays. Were talking trillions.

It works, it's another way of doing things.

If I could go back in time I would stop the government from selling petro-canada. If oil was publicly owned we would be by far the richest country of the planet. I don't even think we would be taxed at all and we would have a bunch of government provided services.

What crap.  These countries only started accumulating cash when they "liberalized" large sectors of their economies.

The only true command economy belongs to North Korea.  Enough said.

Is it even possible for a pure free market to exist?

In a pure free market, corporations do absolutely everything for profit without considering consequences. Regulations are required, otherwise in would be insanity.

Pure free market is pretty much the black market

A purely free market is just as bad as a purely unfree one. Well regulated private enterprise with the understanding that some types of services that are not appropriate for profit making.

It seems like in the absence of regulation whoever has accumulated the most economic power eventually becomes the regulating body. Warlords settle down and become landlords, and eventually the richest landlords become aristocrats and monarchs.

I Never mentioned a "pure" free market. But to answer your question YES. It's seems like the free market/capitalism has been doing pretty darn good for countries all over the world for quite a while now

OK, so just to clarify, are you saying that "pure" free markets do exist in the world today? What does that mean to you? All the rich countries I can think of have tons of regulations affecting how business is done. Can they really be said to have total economic freedom for their citizens?

NO I was saying I never mentioned a "pure" free market because in reality it's often a mix between a command economy and free market. by no means do we have TOTAL economic freedom
