First hunt, would appreciate ID and a quick question.
    #19020148 - 10/23/13 04:05 PM (10 years, 3 months ago)

Species # 1
Habitat:
Back yard, south-west Tennessee, scattered grass with various sticks, trees, leaves, and a nearby lake (approx. 100 yards away), located generally in/nearby woods

Gills:
White with yellowish, off-white tinge; kind of a lot, close together, wavy (more wavy towards the outer edge)

Stem:
Approx. 5-6 inches long, substantially thick, thicker/wider at base, narrower near cap; .25-1 inch in diameter. White with slight offwhite/yellow tinge. Stringy when broken.

Cap:
Approx 2.5 inch in diameter; spongy texture; round, curved inward and under at the edges. Also white / offwhite.

Spore print color:
None

Bruising:
None observed

Other information:

Smells pretty funky and bad. I know it's 99% definitely not any form of active mushroom, but was hoping to get an ID pertaining to my question (see below in paragraph).

Species # 2

Habitat: Back yard, south-west Tennessee, scattered grass with various sticks, trees, leaves, and a nearby lake (approx. 100 yards away), located generally in/nearby woods

Gills: Semi-dense but not packed together too tight; slightly brown; very slight waves at the end of each gill

Stem: brown, more grey above the veil (near cap); breaks easily but feels thick; about .5-1 inch thick near base, getting slightly thinner near cap. Veil is deteriorated but appears to have been brown or grey-brown

Cap: Brown; slight inward curve towards gills near edge; stripes/ridges around the edge extending about halfway up towards the middle of the cap; center is a flat tip about .75 inches in diameter, and slopes down towards edge. Darker brown in center, lighter near edge.

Bruising: None observed

General location: straight out of the ground in general grassy area with scattered trees.

Species # 3

Habitat: Back yard, south-west Tennessee, scattered grass with various sticks, trees, leaves, and a nearby lake (approx. 100 yards away), located generally in/nearby woods

Gills: white; straight, dense, equally spaced

Stem: Approx .75-1 inch tall; approx. .25-.5 inch wide; brownish-yellow near base, fading to white in the middle

Cap: golden yellow, slightly orange, dry and spongy, thick, round; concave at center; (possibly brownish-orange spores on top)

Bruising: none observed

General location: in ground near a buried dead cat; no grass within 3 feet nearby

Species # 4

Habitat: Back yard, south-west Tennessee, scattered grass with various sticks, trees, leaves, and a nearby lake (approx. 100 yards away), located generally in/nearby woods

Gills: white, thin, dense, slightly wavy near edge (where they meet cap)

Stem: light orange near base, fading to pure white about halfway, near cap; pretty thick, breaks when pinched (attempting to bruise)

Cap: golden orange, orange dust (spores?), orange bumps (pores?); sort of flat/wavy, concave center

Bruising: none observed

General location: same as species # 3; appears to be an older sample.

Species # 5

Habitat: Back yard, south-west Tennessee, scattered grass with various sticks, trees, leaves, and a nearby lake (approx. 100 yards away), located generally in/nearby woods

Gills: thin; not very dense; white with reddish-purpleish-rustyish spots (possibly spores); straight

Stem: straight; pretty strong; about 1.5 inches long, .25-.5 inches thick; light brown; straight

Cap: wavy-flat; brown-grey; shiny; smooth

Bruising: none observed

General location: growing straight out of the ground in same general area as others.

Sorry if this is a waste of time; I know probably none of these are worth while, except possibly 3/4. I am mainly wondering, aside from whether or not any of these are active, if it is bad to store active mushrooms with poisonous mushrooms. I was hunting and storing my samples in a small plastic, empty sandwich meat container. I would like to know (couldn't find elsewhere) if it is safe to eat an active mushroom that has been stored with and touching a deadly mushroom. Thanks for taking the time to reply guys.

PS: the pictures are not blurry if you click them to open in new window

As dry as your mushrooms are, its hard to tell what they were.  I can certainly say that none were active though.  Here are some guesses if you like -

#1 Chlorophyllum species.
#2 looks like an Amanita in sec. vaginata
#3 and #4 are Russula, and likely the same species.
#5 might be an Entoloma

As for mixing toxic mushrooms with edibles, generally speaking its OK.  You would have to actually ingest a piece of the toxic one to cause any harm to yourself.  The danger lies in mixing species, or having small broken pieces of the toxic ones mix up with your edibles.  I would always separate for good measure.
